The released Wednesday came in weaker than expected, reinforcing concerns about the health of the US labor market. Private-sector employers added just 38,000 jobs in August, below the 47,000 expected by economists and the weakest monthly gain since January.
A softer labor market reduces the case for further rate hikes and could instead strengthen expectations for eventual Fed easing.
That shift was reflected in Wednesday’s market performance, with small-cap stocks outperforming their larger peers. The , which tracks US small-cap companies, gained 1.13%, compared with gains of 0.46% for the S&P 500 and 0.45% for the Nasdaq.
The divergence reflects a familiar dynamic: small-cap companies tend to carry more debt and have greater exposure to borrowing costs, making them particularly sensitive to changes in interest-rate expectations. A shift toward lower rates can therefore provide a stronger boost to small caps than to their large-cap counterparts.
However, investors will be watching Friday’s official nonfarm payrolls report more closely. A similarly weak reading could further shift expectations for monetary policy and potentially extend the recent outperformance of small-cap stocks.
