Waterstones hires Next chairman as it moves closer to listing on the London stock market

    Updated: 22:01, 25 June 2026

Waterstones has hired the chairman of Next as it moves a step closer to listing on the London stock market.

The bookseller, which runs 320 shops in the UK including Blackwell’s and Foyles, has appointed City veteran Michael Roney as non-executive chairman.

He has led Next since 2017 and was also boss of Bunzl from 2005 to 2016.

It comes as Elliott Management, the activist fund that bought the bookshop in 2018, is understood to be looking at spinning off Waterstones and US counterpart Barnes & Noble via a possible London listing.

It came as another British firm, Doncasters, kicked off trading in New York yesterday, with shares rising 39 per cent.

City listing: Bookseller Waterstones, which runs 320 shops in the UK including Blackwell’s and Foyles, said it has appointed City veteran Michael Roney as chairman
