Stock Market Today: Stocks Head Lower as Hot Inflation Puts Another Fed Rate Hike Back in Play

    October 14, 20263 Mins Read

A surprise jump in consumer prices just flipped the Fed’s playbook for October, and stocks, yields, and rate-hike odds all moved fast. Here is what the morning data means for your portfolio before the opening bell.

The S&P 500 is headed for a lower open because September consumer prices came in higher than forecast. The report pushed Treasury yields up and put another Federal Reserve rate hike back in play for this month. Premarket trading in funds that track the S&P 500 was down 0.3%. Even after a choppy week, the S&P 500 proxy is still up 14% year to date.

    Premarket Snapshot Before the Bell

    Index Latest Reading Basis
    S&P 500 -0.3% Delayed premarket ETF proxy
Nasdaq Composite -0.15% to 27,204 Tuesday close (the Nasdaq-100 proxy is -0.6% premarket)
Dow -0.2% Delayed premarket ETF proxy
Russell 2000 -1.1% Delayed premarket ETF proxy
VIX 15.21, up 0.37 Monday close

Hot CPI Revives October Hike Odds

Consumer prices rose 3.7% from a year earlier, up from 3.4% in August and above the 3.6% economists expected. Core inflation also came in above forecasts. Most traders had expected the Fed to hold off on its next hike until December. After the report, they raised the odds of a move this month.

That matters because the Fed already lifted its upper target to 4% from 3.75% in September. The 10-year yield, which closed Tuesday at 5.2%, rose this morning. Higher yields hit small caps hardest because many of those companies carry floating-rate debt. That helps explain why the Russell 2000 proxy is down 5% over the past month.

Banks and Memory Chips Move Stocks

Bank of America (NYSE:BAC | BAC Price Prediction) fell before the open after its profit disappointed, even excluding a $1.2 billion fine. BlackRock (NYSE:BLK) rose after reporting record assets.

Chipmakers are still weighing on tech. Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU) lost 3.6% Tuesday on reports of technology advances at Chinese memory maker CXMT. The PHLX chip index has fallen more than 8% in five sessions, and memory stocks extended their declines this morning.

What the Inflation Report Means for Your Portfolio

Analysts expect S&P 500 third-quarter earnings to rise over 30%. Those strong expectations have pulled the index’s forward valuation below 19 times expected earnings, the lowest since 2023. Today’s CPI report tests whether that earnings growth can outrun rising rates. The rally is also narrow: the median S&P 500 stock is up less than 5% this year. For index investors, a few AI names are carrying most of your gains (we highlighted seven of the lesser-known suppliers powering that expansion, from power to cooling, in a free report you can grab here).

Wall Street’s fear gauge, the VIX, measures how much volatility options traders expect from the S&P 500. Near 15, it sits in its normal range, so traders are pricing in caution.

    Next Catalysts on the Calendar

Over the next few days, watch the Fed’s October decision, which is now in doubt, and how bank and chip stocks trade as more earnings come.
