The Next Evolution Of AI In Finance: From Insight To Action

Just a few years ago, finance leaders were still debating whether AI belonged in the finance function. Today, that conversation is largely over.

The question facing CFOs is no longer whether AI will transform finance. It is how quickly organizations can translate AI-driven insights into measurable business outcomes.

    Operationalizing Intelligence

Over the past decade, finance teams have invested heavily in ERP systems, AP automation, procurement and analytics. These investments have digitized operations and enabled organizations to process unprecedented volumes of transactions. Yet many finance leaders now process more data than they can effectively analyze, interpret and react to. As automated transaction volumes grow and audit requirements and fraud schemes become more sophisticated, organizations are increasingly confronted with a significant controls gap: the difference between what systems automatically tee up and disburse for payment, and what finance teams can realistically investigate before it leaves their account.

In a previous article, I discussed how finance risk intelligence (FRI) is emerging as a new category designed to help organizations close this gap by creating a continuous layer of intelligence across finance operations, using AI to immediately identify and prioritize potential risks before they turn into losses for an organization. What has become increasingly clear since then is that intelligence alone is not enough. The next challenge is operationalizing that intelligence at scale.

Closing that gap requires more than better dashboards and reports.

Why Reporting Is No Longer The Goal

For years, financial technology focused on reports. Dashboards and analytics platforms have helped organizations understand spending patterns, identify trends and monitor performance. These capabilities remain important, but visibility alone does not reduce risk.

The challenge is identifying true anomalies and determining which matter most, what actions to take and how to execute them consistently and transparently within established controls.

Leading finance organizations are shifting from retrospective analysis to operational intelligence. Instead of reviewing what happened last month or last quarter, they are identifying emerging risks as they arise and intervening before they become financial losses.

This represents a significant change in how finance teams operate. Analytics is no longer simply a reporting function; it is becoming an operational capability.

The Real AI Differentiator (Not LLMs)

Much of the public conversation about AI continues to focus on LLMs. Every few months, a new model is introduced, and organizations rush to compare capabilities.

In practice, however, the most meaningful differentiator is rarely the LLM itself. The quality of the underlying data and the context surrounding it often determines whether AI produces useful and trusted outcomes.

Every time an auditor validates a finding, a finance professional investigates an exception or a team resolves a risk event, valuable institutional knowledge is generated. Ideally, over time, these outcomes accumulate into a repository of actioned and labeled data that reflects how an organization identifies risk, prioritizes responses and achieves successful resolutions.

Generic LLMs may provide basic reasoning to detect unusual activity, but they often cannot produce reliable outcomes for identifying duplicate payments, policy violations, operational errors, attempted fraud or legitimate business exceptions. That understanding comes from capturing and learning from years of auditor-verified outcomes and domain expertise.

As AI adoption matures, organizations with large volumes of actioned data will have a significant advantage. The future of finance AI will be shaped less by generic models and more by access to institutional knowledge.

That will shape most organizations’ approach to AI. Dedicated, best-in-class AI solutions built on volumes of actioned data should be most effective at helping finance teams identify which potential risks need the most attention before issues escalate into material losses or cash leakage.

    The Rise Of Agentic Execution

The latest important development in finance is the transition from insight to action.

For many finance teams, the audit process, including investigation and resolution, remains highly manual. Even with the benefit of native automation platforms, teams spend countless hours gathering documentation, enforcing policies, routing approvals and coordinating remediation efforts.

These activities are essential yet difficult to scale. This is where agentic AI use cases and purpose-built agents have the potential to fundamentally change how finance operates.

Unlike traditional automation tools that lack reasoning and follow predefined workflows, finance agents can replicate much of a human auditor’s actions: investigating exceptions, gathering supporting information, assessing context, recommending next steps and documenting outcomes. In high-confidence scenarios, they can also automatically execute approved actions in accordance with established policies and controls.

Importantly, the value of these agents lies not solely in their autonomy but also in their ability to operate within governance frameworks and keep humans “in the loop” where decisioning may require additional judgment or expertise.

These emerging agentic AI capabilities are potentially the productivity unlock that CFOs have been looking for to truly transform their back-office execution, especially when decisions are delivered with clear, explainable and transparent audit trails that detail exactly how they were reached.

When deployed correctly, AI agents will allow finance teams to spend less time on routine, time-consuming tasks and more time on process improvement, policy adjustments and finance risk management.

Preparing For The Next Phase Of Finance

AI innovation is moving at an extraordinary pace. As transformative as the past 12 months have been, the capabilities coming to finance organizations in the next 12 months promise to be even more exciting.

That pace of change makes selecting the right technology partner increasingly important. Finance leaders should evaluate whether a provider has the assets needed to keep pace and continuously improve over time: proprietary models, actioned data, deep finance expertise, strong governance frameworks, transparent decisioning and a demonstrated ability to innovate responsibly.

To gain the greatest advantage from AI, organizations will need to consistently turn insights into action while maintaining trust, governance and control across their finance practice.
