    Stock Market Holiday

Stock Market Holiday Today: After a symbolic and spirited Muhurat trading session that marked the beginning of Samvat 2082, Indian equity markets will remain closed on Wednesday, October 22, on account of Diwali Balipratipada, a festival celebrating prosperity, renewal, and devotion. Normal trading on the BSE and NSE will resume on Thursday, October 23.

    Muhurat Trading Recap

Tuesday’s one-hour Muhurat trading session — a time-honoured ritual symbolising auspicious beginnings for investors — started on a strong note but ended largely flat as early gains fizzled out.

The Nifty 50 climbed 0.1% to close at 25,868.6, while the Sensex gained 0.07% to settle at 84,426.34, marking their highest closing levels since September 2024.

Despite the subdued finish, investor sentiment remained upbeat, with active participation across large financials, auto majors, and energy stocks. The special session, held between 1:45 pm and 2:45 pm, saw light volumes but healthy trading activity, reflecting optimism for the new Samvat year.

    Significance of Diwali Balipratipada

Diwali Balipratipada — also known as Govardhan Puja or Padwa — is celebrated a day after Diwali to honour King Bali, whose devotion and righteousness earned him a blessing from Lord Vishnu.

According to legend, Vishnu, in his Vamana avatar, granted King Bali permission to visit his kingdom once a year — a day now observed as Balipratipada. The festival symbolises the triumph of humility and devotion over arrogance and greed, and represents renewal, prosperity, and new beginnings — making it particularly auspicious for traders and investors.

    Stock Market Holidays in 2025

According to the stock market holiday calendar for 2025, there are 18 trading holidays, with four falling on weekdays. After the October holidays, both the BSE and NSE will observe one-day closures each in November and December.

    • Next Holiday: November 5 — on account of Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji
    • Final Holiday of the Year: December 25 (Thursday) — for Christmas

Stock Market Outlook for Samvat 2082

Indian equities ended Samvat 2081 with modest gains, as the Nifty 50 rose 6% amid challenges such as geopolitical tensions, US tariff concerns, weak earnings, and foreign capital outflows.

“The key takeaway from Samvat 2081 is India’s significant underperformance,” said V.K. Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.

“While several factors, including Trump tariffs, contributed to this, the sharp decline in India’s earnings growth to 5% in FY25 from an average of 24% over the prior three years was the major reason,” he added.

Looking ahead, analysts expect Samvat 2082 to bring renewed momentum as earnings revive, supported by income tax relief, GST reforms, a healthy monsoon, and easing geopolitical tensions. “Fiscal and monetary reforms are starting to yield results,” Vijayakumar noted. “Sales of automobiles and white goods have already surged this festive season. If the trend continues, earnings growth could reach 8–10% in FY26, accelerating to 15% in FY27.”

He further added that if these expectations materialise, markets could stage a strong rally in Samvat 2082, compensating for the underperformance seen in the previous year. “In the near term, a possible India–US trade deal may boost sentiment, but the long-term trend will depend on earnings growth,” he said.
