Kerala Food and Public Administration Minister GR Anil has claimed that Supplyco’s intervention to rein in soaring prices of coconut oil in the retail market ahead of the Onam season is yielding results.

According to the Minister, the government could be able to control the unrestricted surge in coconut oil and other essential commodity prices through effective market interventions, much before the Onam festival. Coconut oil prices will further come down after August 25 as the government has taken all measures to rein in the prices and ensure adequate availability of other essential commodities such as rice, chillies and others, he said.

Officials from the Cochin Oil Merchants Association said coconut oil prices fell by ₹7-10 in the last one week, slipping to ₹373 per litre in the wholesale market, while copra eased to ₹226 per kg.

Speaking to the media at the launch of new Sabari products for the festival season, the Minister said the government has procured around 2.5 quintals of foodgrains, including rice, black gram and sugar. Supplyco is targeting a ₹300-crore turnover in this festival season, which is expected to benefit 50 lakh families.

The minister said that the ₹168 crore turnover recorded last month for 32 lakh beneficiaries shows that people continue to rely on Supplyco for essential commodities. In August, 21 lakh families have purchased food items from Supplyco so far, he said.

Actress Rima Kallingal unveiled the new products under the Sabari brand, which include rice powder (puttu powder, appam powder), payasam mix (semia/palada 200 g packets), sugar and salt (kalluppu, powderyup) and palakkadan matta (vadiyari, undayari). With this, the Sabari portfolio has expanded to 19 products.

All the new products are available at subsidised rates at Supplyco’s outlets such as Maveli stores, supermarkets, hypermarkets and People’s Bazaar.
