Nvidia earnings could revive stalling stock market if trends break

    August 21, 20263 Mins Read

Every few months, the entire stock market holds its breath and waits for one company to speak. On August 26, that company is Nvidia.

The AI chipmaker reports its fiscal second-quarter 2027 results after the closing bell, and the stakes extend well beyond Jensen Huang’s balance sheet. Nvidia is a heavyweight component of both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq-100, meaning its post-earnings move tends to ripple across the broader market whether investors want it to or not.

A record quarter that the stock market mostly shrugged off

Nvidia’s most recent quarter was, by almost any measure, extraordinary. The company posted revenue of $81.6 billion, an 85% jump compared to the same period a year earlier. Non-GAAP earnings per share came in at $1.87, beating analyst expectations.

And yet, NVDA shares have climbed roughly 12% year-to-date through late July 2026. For a company growing revenue at that pace, 12% is the market’s equivalent of a polite golf clap.

The S&P 500 has outpaced it. Nvidia was priced for perfection heading into 2026, and even blowout numbers haven’t been enough to move the needle much on a stock already carrying enormous expectations.

Over the four quarters leading into this report, Nvidia shares declined between 1% and 9% following results days, even when the underlying numbers were strong.

What analysts are watching on August 26

The AI and data-center revenue line is the number that matters most. Demand for Nvidia’s chips from hyperscalers building out AI infrastructure has been the engine behind those 85% growth figures, and the central question heading into this report is whether that demand remains as voracious as it looked six months ago.

Investors want to know if orders are being pulled forward, meaning companies stockpiling chips today that they won’t actually deploy for a year. If that’s the case, the current growth numbers might be borrowing from the future rather than reflecting genuine sustained demand. Strong current-quarter results paired with cautious forward guidance would likely trigger exactly the kind of sell-off the historical pattern predicts.

Valuation anxiety and the skeptic’s case

Nvidia’s valuation has been a persistent source of debate, with the stock trading at multiples that assume continued hypergrowth for years.

A company growing revenue at 85% annually that has still underperformed the broader index isn’t a sign the market hates Nvidia. It’s a sign the market already owned a lot of it at higher prices, and the buyers who might push it higher are waiting for confirmation that the growth story has legs beyond the current AI spending cycle.
