    TLDR

    • The NYSE and Nasdaq are open on Monday, Oct. 12, with regular hours of 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern.
    • Bond markets and over-the-counter operations are closed for the holiday.
    • Most banks and all U.S. Postal Service offices are closed, while UPS and FedEx still deliver.
    • The S&P 500 and Dow have averaged October gains of 1.2% and 1.5% over the past decade.
    • Crypto markets trade 24/7 and do not follow a holiday schedule.

Columbus Day gives millions of Americans a day off, but Wall Street is staying open. The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market will both keep regular hours on Monday, Oct. 12.

Regular trading runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern time. Both exchanges are closed on weekends.

Bond markets and over-the-counter operations will be closed. The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association sets the bond market schedule, and it closes for Columbus Day, which it calls Indigenous Peoples Day.

How Other Markets and Services Are Running

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the International Exchange will be open with limits. CME will calculate and share settlement prices. Because banks are closed, it cannot process some cash transfers, collateral transactions or margin payments until the next day.

ICE futures trading will be mostly open, though canola contracts will be closed. Most foreign stock exchanges are open, including those in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Paris and London. The Toronto Stock Exchange is closed for Canadian Thanksgiving.

Most banks are closed because they follow the Federal Reserve’s holiday schedule. Chase will have branches open, but online transactions will process the next day. TD Bank said its locations will be open.

All U.S. Postal Service offices are closed. UPS and FedEx will still deliver, though some FedEx services will run on a modified schedule.

    Market Backdrop and October History

Stocks have lost some momentum in recent weeks. Investors are weighing concerns about high artificial intelligence valuations and rising borrowing costs. Long-term bond yields have reached their highest levels in more than a decade.

October has been unpredictable for stocks over the past 10 years. Sharp selloffs have sometimes been followed by large rallies. The idea of an “October effect,” a belief that stocks do poorly in the month, has little historical support.

According to Dow Jones Market Data, the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average have averaged October gains of 1.2% and 1.5%, respectively, over the past decade. Each index finished the month higher five times in that span.

In 2018, the S&P 500 fell 6.9% and the Dow dropped 5%. In 2022, the indexes rose 7.9% and 14%, respectively. Last year, the S&P 500 gained 2.2% and the Dow added 2.5%.

The stock market will observe 10 holidays in 2026, including two early closings. The next full closing is Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, Nov. 26. Markets will close early at 1 p.m. Eastern on Friday, Nov. 27.

Unlike stocks and bonds, the crypto market has no holiday schedule. Cryptocurrency trades through a decentralized network of computers, so it can be traded 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
