How to interpret this table
- Property Transfer Tax: The tax charged when ownership of a property changes hands.
- Buying Costs: Transfer taxes, stamp duties, notary and registration fees, and any typical agent commission paid by the buyer.
- Selling Costs: The seller’s share of agent commissions, legal fees, and taxes charged specifically on the sale.
- Roundtrip Costs: Buying and selling costs combined, expressed as a percentage of the property value.
- Methodology: Figures are national estimates based on official sources and property law references. Where costs vary by region, property type or buyer, we use the most common range for residential transactions. We update the data annually.
- Use as a benchmark: Costs for a specific deal depend on its location, value, negotiated terms and legal structure. Consult a qualified local attorney for advice on a purchase or sale.
