    Conroe, Pearland rank among US cities with highest property tax burden, study reveals

    If you live in the cities of Conroe or Pearland and you feel like your property taxes are rather steep, a recent study has shown that you’re not alone.

    The study, which was conducted by SmartAsset, ranked 343 of the largest cities in the United States based on the percentage of annual homeowner income that was going towards property taxes.

    Conroe ranked as the city with the 16th highest tax burden in the nation, while Pearland ranked 21st.

    According to the data, the median income of households with a mortgage in Conroe was $114,220. Conroe residents had a median monthly housing cost of $2,453 and a median annual property tax of $5,866 — meaning that 5.1% of their income went towards property taxes.

    In Pearland, the median income of households with a mortgage was reported at $166,351. Pearland households had a median monthly housing cost of $2,857 and a median annual property tax of $8,351 — meaning that 5.0% of their income went towards property taxes.

    Four other Texas cities ranked in the top 25: Edinburg (14th), Georgetown (15th), Grand Prairie (18th), and Fort Worth (24th).

    Houston came in as No. 101 on the list, with a median household income of $136,068, median monthly housing costs of $2,415, and median annual property taxes of $5,592. An estimated 4.1% of income went to property taxes.

    The highest-ranking cities were primarily on the east coast, with eight of the top 10 coming from either New Jersey, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania.
