Trump threatens expanded strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites as Bitcoin dips on geopolitical risk

    July 26, 20262 Mins Read

President Donald Trump is openly floating military strikes on Iran’s underground nuclear facilities. Trump’s comments in late July 2026 singled out Pickaxe Mountain, a hardened facility near Iran’s Natanz enrichment complex, calling it a “possible target for a nice big fat shot.”

Bitcoin has already felt the tremor. CoinDesk reported that BTC declined more than 2% amid the escalating US-Iran tensions, as traders dialed back their risk appetite.

What is Pickaxe Mountain, and why does it matter

Pickaxe Mountain, formally known as Kuh-e Kolang Gaz La, sits roughly 2 kilometers from Iran’s well-known Natanz enrichment complex and about 220 kilometers south of Tehran. Construction on the facility began in fall 2020, after a significant incident damaged Iran’s centrifuge assembly capacity and forced the country to build a replacement.

Israeli intelligence estimates that thousands of uranium-enrichment centrifuges have been relocated into Pickaxe Mountain since the 2025-2026 conflicts. Trump confirmed the US has “eyes on” the facility.

    Crypto’s geopolitical reflex

When US-Iran tensions spike, Bitcoin tends to move with risk assets, not against them. The 2%-plus decline reported by CoinDesk this time around fits the pattern. The crypto market’s 24/7 trading cycle means it often prices in geopolitical risk faster than stocks. When BTC drops on geopolitical fear, altcoins typically fall harder, a dynamic that amplifies portfolio risk for investors who are overweight smaller tokens.

    Why this escalation is different

Striking a hardened mountain facility requires specialized munitions, likely the Massive Ordnance Penetrator or similar bunker-busting weapons. Thousands of centrifuges relocated underground means that even a successful strike on Pickaxe Mountain might not achieve the strategic objective of setting back Iran’s enrichment capacity.

No specific crypto tokens or protocols have been directly tied to these developments. If oil spikes on supply disruption fears from a strike on Iran, that feeds inflation expectations, which complicates the Federal Reserve’s rate path, which matters for risk assets including crypto.
