London shares pull back as easing Middle east oil panic trims energy majors By Investing.com

Investing.com – British equities dipped on Thursday, pulling back from multi-week highs as a sustained drop in crude oil prices dragged on London’s energy heavyweights and snapped the blue-chip index’s longest winning streak since late May.

The slipped 0.5%, after ending a six-session advance on Wednesday. Softening raw material prices weighed directly on index titans and , counteracting positive corporate prints across the insurance sector and broader risk relief from overnight U.S. mega-cap earnings.

Trading desks navigated a dense mix of corporate earnings, industrial production drags, and ex-dividend adjustments.

Insurance heavyweight slipped 1.2% despite reporting an 8% increase in first-half new business profit to $1.38 billion.

Conversely, industrial data underscored ongoing manufacturing headwinds. British vehicle production tumbled 11.6% year-on-year in July to 63,655 units, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). SMMT cited a 15.9% drop in exports alongside earlier-than-usual summer maintenance shutdowns at key assembly plants.

Global benchmark fell 0.5% toward $87.40 a barrel, extending a multi-day slide as diplomatic talks between Qatari and Iranian officials in Tehran fueled expectations of an agreement to reopen commercial transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

Sinking oil prices weighed heavily on London’s integrated energy producers, even as industrial miners drew support from a seventh consecutive daily gain in prices and firming markets.

Traders pivot to Jackson Hole keynote

With domestic industrial data digested and crude prices stabilizing, Square Mile desks are pivoting to international central bank signals.

Investors are holding cash on the sidelines ahead of Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s inaugural keynote address at the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium on Friday, seeking clarity on the trajectory of global borrowing costs and systemic liquidity into autumn.
