European natural gas set for third weekly gain after retreating from March highs By Investing.com

    August 28, 20262 Mins Read

Investing.com – European natural gas benchmarks traded off their highest levels since March 19, 2026, on Friday, pausing after a multi-session surge but remaining firmly on track to log their third consecutive weekly gain.

Both and equivalent held onto substantial weekly advances, anchored by persistent concerns over low underground storage levels and shipping delays through the Persian Gulf.

While diplomatic headlines out of the Middle East triggered a temporary pullback from early-week peaks, wholesale hub prices remain elevated compared to late-summer averages, reflecting a high structural risk premium embedded across continental energy curves.

European gas contracts had touched five-month highs earlier in the session as traders priced in escalating friction in the Middle East and severe disruptions to Qatari liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.

However, prices retreated off those peaks after reports confirmed that regional mediators – including Qatar and Oman – had initiated talks with Washington and Tehran aimed at securing commercial transit through the vital maritime conduit.

The prospect of a negotiated off-ramp helped uncoil part of the geopolitical risk premium that had built up over previous weeks, causing wholesale contracts to pull back from their March high-water marks even as underlying physical market conditions remain tight.

Data from Gas Infrastructure Europe shows underground storage caverns across the European Union holding at approximately 62% of total capacity—a significant injection deficit compared to the five-year seasonal average of nearly 79%.

High summer power demand driven by elevated continental temperatures, combined with routine maintenance across Norwegian offshore fields, has severely constrained seasonal storage replenishment rates.
