European airlines pressured as Middle East tensions push oil prices higher By Investing.com

    July 13, 20263 Mins Read

Investing.com — Shares of European airline companies fell between 0.07% and 2% on Monday after the United States launched multiple rounds of military strikes against Iran over the weekend, pushing prices up nearly 3% amid a deepening standoff over access to the Strait of Hormuz.

On Sunday, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said it carried out another round of strikes aimed at further degrading Tehran’s ability to target civilian mariners and commercial vessels transiting the strategic waterway.

The latest round came after Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces attacked the M/V GFS Galaxy, a Cyprus-flagged container vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz, CENTCOM said.

A civilian crew member is missing and the vessel is unable to continue its journey due to an onboard fire and significant engine room damage, according to CENTCOM.

rose $2.30, or 3.03%, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate gained $2.06, or 2.88%.

U.S. Central Command on Saturday said it had completed a third round of strikes this week against Iran, hitting approximately 140 Iranian military targets with precision munitions launched by land- and sea-based fighter aircraft, drones, and naval vessels.

Targets included Iranian missile and drone sites, naval capabilities, ammunition storage facilities, communication networks, and coastal surveillance locations. CENTCOM said it had struck more than 300 targets over three nights.

U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, said a tentative agreement with Tehran had collapsed hours after being reached. “We had meetings with them. They agreed to a deal yesterday. A perfect deal for us. No nuclear, no this, no that, no nothing. They gave up everything, and then after that, they left the room and then within an hour they launched a drone at a ship,” Trump said.

He added: “It’s open,” regarding the Strait of Hormuz. “We bombed the hell out of them last night.”

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said “1000 Missiles are Locked and Loaded and aimed at the Islamic Republic of Iran,” warning of further action should Tehran act on threats against him.

Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority said passage through the strait was “currently not possible” due to what it called “recent illegal movements” of U.S. military forces and said transit would require a permit from the authority. CENTCOM disputed this on X: “Iran does not control the Strait of Hormuz. It remains an international waterway. U.S. forces are positioned and prepared to keep it that way.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, in an X post said Iran had “kept its word,” accusing the U.S. Treasury Secretary of violating “Para 9 of the MoU,” and adding, “There can only be mutual compliance.”
