Strategy (MSTR) Stock Jumps 4.4% as CEO Confirms Bitcoin Buying to Restart

    August 19, 20263 Mins Read

    Key Highlights

    • MSTR shares gained 4.4% to reach $96.60 following news that major crypto investors accumulated approximately 43,000 BTC valued at $2.75 billion over two months
    • CEO Phong Le announced Strategy plans to restart Bitcoin acquisitions later in the year following a seven-week purchasing hiatus
    • The company maintains $4.8 billion in cash reserves while its Bitcoin holdings remain steady at 840,447 BTC for the seventh consecutive week
    • Sound Financial Strategies Group initiated a position valued at $1.69 million, contributing to the 59.84% institutional ownership
    • Wall Street analysts maintain a Moderate Buy rating with a $239.81 average target, despite Weiss Ratings’ recent downgrade to Sell and target reductions from several firms

Shares of Strategy (MSTR) advanced 4.4% during Wednesday’s morning session to $96.60, buoyed by blockchain data indicating major Bitcoin holders have acquired approximately 43,000 BTC during the previous 60-day period.

This accumulation activity, representing approximately $2.75 billion in value, brought a critical spot demand indicator near its first positive territory since the end of February 2026. Given MSTR’s position as a leveraged Bitcoin exposure vehicle, strengthening demand indicators typically trigger swift stock movements.

The rally gained additional momentum when CEO Phong Le publicly confirmed that Strategy anticipates restarting Bitcoin acquisitions before year-end. The firm’s seven-week buying hiatus had generated uncertainty among certain shareholders.

Throughout this suspension period, Strategy generated roughly $333.7 million via equity offerings and expanded its dollar cash position to $4.8 billion. This substantial liquidity provides strategic optionality for timing market re-entry.

Strategy’s Bitcoin treasury currently stands at 840,447 BTC, a figure that has remained static across seven weeks. Executive Chairman Michael Saylor has indicated the company may consider MSTR share buybacks should the stock trade at a significant discount relative to its Bitcoin asset base.

The firm additionally bought back approximately $132 million of STRC preferred securities, strengthening its preferred equity framework.

    Institutional Investment Trends

Sound Financial Strategies Group LLC established a fresh position in MSTR throughout Q2, acquiring 51,323 shares with an approximate value of $1.69 million. This holding represents 1.1% of the firm’s total portfolio and ranks as its 14th-largest investment.

Institutional ownership across Strategy totals 59.84%. Multiple additional institutional investors have expanded or launched positions in recent reporting periods, including Dogwood Wealth Management, which increased its holdings by 280% during Q4.

Corporate insider transactions have tilted toward dispositions. During the trailing 90-day window, company insiders divested 165,325 shares totaling roughly $20.3 million, while purchasing only 11,166 shares valued at approximately $1 million.

    Wall Street Price Projections

Analyst outlook remains generally constructive though somewhat tempered. HC Wainwright maintains a $325 price objective. TD Cowen reduced its target from $400 down to $260 while retaining its Buy recommendation. Cantor Fitzgerald lowered its target from $212 to $186 alongside an Overweight designation.

Weiss Ratings bucked the trend, downgrading MSTR to Sell from Hold on August 4.

The collective consensus among 19 sell-side analysts stands at Moderate Buy, featuring an average one-year price objective of $239.81, substantially exceeding Wednesday’s opening level of $92.52.

MSTR’s 52-week trading band extends from $81.81 through $365.21. The equity’s 50-day moving average registers at $99.64 while the 200-day moving average sits at $128.90.

Strategy’s latest quarterly results showed a loss of $24.45 per share, significantly underperforming the analyst consensus projection of a $2.19 loss. Quarterly revenue totaled $122.37 million, reflecting 6.9% year-over-year growth.

MSCI has floated a proposal to exclude Strategy from select global investable market indexes, a change that may diminish passive investment fund demand for the shares.
