Case for Bitcoin stronger as regulation takes back seat, BlackRock says

    August 26, 20263 Mins Read

    Key Points

    • Rising U.S. fiscal concerns are driving investor demand for alternative stores of value such as bitcoin and gold, Robbie Mitchnick, BlackRock’s head of digital assets, told CNBC in an interview.
    • “Debt and deficit levels are a major concern for markets,” he said, noting that when such concerns return to the headlines, they tend to benefit “assets like bitcoin and gold.”
    • The CLARITY Act stalled in Congress is “less critical” to bitcoin than it is to the broader crypto industry

Bitcoin’s recent rebound puts the spotlight back on its role as a hedge against fiscal risk and reinforces Robbie Mitchnick’s long held view that the crypto asset serves to diversity portfolios, and isn’t just another risk asset. In an interview with CNBC, the head of digital assets at BlackRock said the recent bitcoin rally is consistent with the flagship cryptocurrency’s history of rebounding whenever investor sentiment is especially weak, and reflects its long-term risk and return drivers versus stocks and other traditional assets. In the “last couple weeks, equities and other asset classes have been pretty challenged … fixed income markets have been choppy, and you’ve seen bitcoin … have a fairly significant rally because of that distinct nature and the way it’s seen as this emerging store of value,” the Stanford MBA said. IBIT 3M mountain iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) – past 3 months Bitcoin is trading below $80,000 after a sharp rebound last week, when it logged its biggest three-day rally since 2023. The move came as concerns over the size of U.S. debt and deficits again gained traction, with investors like Stanley Druckenmiller and Ray Dalio warning that America’s fiscal condition might pose a structural threat to markets. Mitchnick said those concerns are increasingly drawing investors to bitcoin and gold as they focus on the purchasing power of fiat currencies and seek alternative stores of value. “Debt and deficit levels are a major concern for markets,” Mitchnick said, adding that when those concerns return to the headlines, it tends to benefit “assets like bitcoin and gold.” That macro backdrop may also help explain why bitcoin has continued to rally even as enthusiasm has cooled for the the CLARITY Act, legislation aimed at streamlining the structure of the crypto market. That act is “less critical” to bitcoin than it is to other parts of crypto industry and the market for crypto assets. Bitcoin already has much of the regulatory acceptance it needs while other pockets of crypto, like decentralized finance, stand to gain more from the legislation. “Markets in general and a lot of the participants around the ecosystem are seeing the regulatory clarity as further potential upside, but not necessarily banking on it or considering that in the base case today,” Mitchnick said. “I don’t have a view on what to make of the latest state of that process,” but progress on Capitol Hill is “certainly something that we’re watching and waiting to see.”
