Bitcoin Bancorp Snaps Up 2,547 Crypto ATMs for Just $620K in Bankruptcy Auction

    September 11, 20263 Mins Read

    Key Takeaways

    • Bitcoin Bancorp acquired 2,547 cryptocurrency ATMs for just $620,750 through bankruptcy proceedings
    • Bitcoin Depot entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May following a 49% drop in Q1 revenue
    • The kiosks were valued at more than $26 million on Bitcoin Depot’s books as of Q4 2025
    • An additional $110,500 was paid for domain rights, patents, trademarks, and other intellectual assets
    • Crypto ATM-related fraud reached $389 million in 2025, representing a 58% annual increase

Bitcoin Bancorp, a Las Vegas-headquartered digital asset infrastructure firm, has acquired over 2,500 cryptocurrency ATM units from the bankrupt Bitcoin Depot for approximately $620,000.

The acquisition was finalized as part of Bitcoin Depot’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy process. Bitcoin Depot had reported property and equipment assets exceeding $26 million in Q4 2025, meaning the final sale price represents a dramatic markdown.

    Bitcoin Depot’s Collapse Explained

Bitcoin Depot, previously America’s top crypto ATM operator, sought bankruptcy protection in May after experiencing significant financial turbulence in the opening quarter. The company saw revenues plummet by 49% year-over-year, while shifting from a $12.2 million quarterly profit to a $9.5 million loss.

According to CEO Alex Holmes, increasing regulatory pressure played a central role in the downturn. Numerous states have implemented more stringent compliance requirements, transaction caps, and in certain jurisdictions, complete prohibitions on cryptocurrency ATM operations. Holmes characterized these regulatory shifts as rendering the company’s operational approach “unsustainable.”

During its prime, Bitcoin Depot achieved a market valuation near $400 million with a Nasdaq listing. The company maintained approximately 9,700 ATM locations spanning 48 states in the U.S., 10 provinces across Canada, and six Australian states.

    Details of Bitcoin Bancorp’s Acquisition

Bitcoin Bancorp, currently trading on OTC Markets at approximately $0.04 per share with a market capitalization around $18.5 million, secured the winning bid for the 2,547 ATM units.

Beyond the kiosks themselves, the firm committed another $110,500 to obtain floorspace contracts, intellectual property assets, trademark rights, patent holdings, and ownership of the BitcoinDepot.com domain.

According to Bitcoin Bancorp, this transaction provides access to a ready-made physical distribution network, potentially accelerating growth initiatives without requiring ground-up infrastructure development.

Certain portions of the transaction have already been completed. The company anticipates finalizing remaining components within the next quarter, pending customary closing requirements.

Regulatory Challenges Facing Crypto ATM Industry

Cryptocurrency ATM operators face mounting regulatory pressure across multiple jurisdictions. The United Kingdom implemented a complete ban several years back, while both Australia and Canada have recently intensified enforcement actions.

Regulators often prioritize crypto ATMs due to their tangible, physical presence. A kiosk located in a convenience store presents a more straightforward regulatory target compared to decentralized protocols or purely digital exchanges.

Fraud involving crypto ATMs resulted in $389 million in documented losses throughout 2025, marking a 58% increase from the previous year. Fraudsters frequently leverage these machines to extract funds from victims following elaborate online deception schemes.

Nevertheless, the industry continues operating. Approximately 39,000 crypto ATMs remained active globally as of March this year, with roughly 78% positioned within the United States. The top ten operators collectively manage about 78% of all installations.

Bitcoin Bancorp’s acquisition of Bitcoin Depot’s former infrastructure indicates that smaller market participants remain interested in the sector despite ongoing challenges.
