    Stock Market Today: Sensex plunges over 1,000 points, Nifty slumps to 22,231.80 – Market News

    Sensex today | Nifty 50 | Stock market at 3:30 PM: The benchmark indices plummeted today, October 8, with the Nifty ending at 22,231.80 points, down 371.25 points, or 1.6%. The Sensex tumbled 1,045.46 points, or 1.4%, and ended at 71,593.24 points.

    The Nifty fell to an 18-month low of 22,179.90 points during the day. Adani Enterprises remained the worst-hit stock throughout the day, ending 5.4% lower. JSW Steel and ITC closed over 4% lower. Only three constituents in the Nifty 50, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, and Axis Bank, closed the day with slight gains.

    Sensex today | Nifty 50 | Stock market at 1:00 PM: The benchmark indices plunged by afternoon trade today, with the Nifty plummeting 1.5% to 22,269 points. The Sensex fell 930 points, or 1.3%, to around 72,712 points.

    Adani Enterprises was the worst hit stock in the Nifty 50, losing 7%. ITC and JSW Steel fell 4% each. TCS was trading 1% higher ahead of its earnings later in the day.

    Sensex today | Nifty 50 | Stock market at 12 PM: In afternoon trade, the Sensex fell 668.01 points, or 0.92%, to 71,970.69, while the Nifty 50 declined 245.70 points, or 1.09%, to 22,357.35.

    Among the gainers, Titan rose 1.47%, Tech Mahindra gained 1.25%, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) advanced 1.10%, Infosys climbed 0.95% and HCL Technologies edged higher.

    On the other hand, ITC fell 3.88%, Adani Ports declined 3.47%, InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) slipped 3.04%, Power Grid Corporation of India dropped 2.53% and Reliance Industries declined 2.39

    Sensex today | Nifty 50 | Stock market at 11 AM: In intraday trade, the Sensex fell 406.03 points, or 0.56%, to 72,232.67, while the Nifty 50 declined 157.90 points, or 0.70%, to 22,445.15.

    Among the top gainers, Tech Mahindra rose 1.81%, HCL Technologies gained 1.69%, Infosys advanced 1.48%, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) climbed 1.47% and Trent increased 1.25%.

    On the other hand, ITC fell 3.03%, Adani Ports declined 2.54%, Power Grid Corporation of India slipped 2.29%, InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) dropped 1.99% and Bajaj Finserv declined 1.42%.

    Sensex today | Nifty 50 | Stock market at open: At the opening, the Sensex fell 204 points, or 0.27%, to 72,439.20, while the Nifty 50 declined 69.35 points, or 0.31%, to 22,533.70.

    Among the key laggards, Adani Ports fell 0.88%, Bharat Electronics (BEL) declined 1.02%, Bajaj Finserv slipped 1.08% and Bajaj Finance dropped 1.42%.

    Sensex today | Nifty 50 | Stock market before pre-open: Indian equity markets are likely to open on a cautious note on Wednesday, with GIFT Nifty pointing to a muted start. GIFT Nifty was trading around 22,542, down 50 points in the early hours. Investors are likely to track Asian markets, crude oil prices, US bond yields and foreign and domestic institutional flows for cues on the market’s direction.

    The benchmark indices ended lower on October 7. The Nifty declined 0.8% to close at 22,603.05, while the Sensex fell 429 points, or 0.6%, to end at 72,638.70. Among Nifty 50 stocks, Titan was the biggest laggard, closing nearly 4% lower.

    Key global and domestic cues for October 8, 2026

    Asian Markets Today

    Asian markets opened lower, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 declining 0.4%, South Korea’s Kospi slipping 0.35%, and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 falling 0.4%.

    Crude Oil Today

    Oil prices rose on October 8, with Brent crude gaining 1.35% to $101.55 a barrel, while US crude climbed 1.2% to $89.42 a barrel.

    US Stock Futures  

    US stock futures traded with a positive bias. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures rose 7 points, or 0.01%, while S&P 500 futures gained 0.04%. Nasdaq-100 futures outperformed, advancing 0.1%.

    US Treasury yields

    US equities came under pressure as a sharp rise in Treasury yields weighed on investor sentiment. The 10-year US Treasury yield climbed to 5.3%, while the 30-year yield rose to 5.7%.

    US Dollar Today

    The US Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the dollar’s value against a basket of six foreign currencies, was trading at 102.23 The index evaluates the strength or weakness of the US dollar in comparison to major currencies.

    The basket contains currencies such as the British Pound, Euro, Swedish Krona, Japanese Yen, Swiss Franc, etc. The Indian rupee closed at 96.75 against the US dollar on October 7.

    US market 

    Wall Street ended lower on Wednesday, October 7, as investors booked profits following recent gains. The S&P 500 slipped 0.2%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped more than 340 points, or 0.7%. The Nasdaq Composite also declined 0.2%, marking a weaker close across the major US benchmarks.

    Gold Rate Today

    In the latest trading session, COMEX gold down 0.01% to 4,180.80.

    The rate for 24-carat gold today is Rs 1,49,560 per 10 grams. The 18-carat gold price today in India is Rs 1,12,170. The 24-carat gold rate in Dubai today is Rs 1,36,304.

    Silver Rate Today

    In the latest trading session, COMEX silver down 0.31% to 64.35.

    Silver prices in India stood at Rs 249.90 per gram, while the price was Rs 2,49,900 per kilogram.

    FII, DII data

    Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net sellers in Indian equities on Wednesday, offloading Rs 6,121.40 crore, compared with Rs 2,961.30 crore on Tuesday. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs), however, remained buyers, with net purchases of Rs 4,596.60 crore, according to NSE cash-market data.

    Top sectors in Wednesday’s trade

    In the October 7 trading session, sector-wise, Electronics gained 1.69%, followed by Sugar at 1.60% and Housing Finance at 1.44%.

    Group-wise gainers and losers in Wednesday’s trade

    In the last trading session, group-wise, Essar Group rose 5.09%, followed by Pennar Group at 2.03% and Yash Birla Group at 1.96%. On the other hand, Poddar Group declined 3.27%, Hindujas Group fell 2.83% and Essel Group slipped 2.70%.
