Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund Admiral Shares (VTSAX): What Investors Should Know

A 0.04% expense ratio is not a typo. Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund Admiral Shares (NASDAQ:VTSAX) charges 0.04% a year to own effectively the entire U.S. stock market. On a $100,000 balance, that is roughly $40 in annual fees. The same money in a fund charging 1% would bleed $1,000 a year, and the gap compounds against you for decades.

VTSAX is the Admiral share class of Vanguard’s flagship total-market index fund, tracking the CRSP US Total Market Index since its November 13, 2000 inception. It holds thousands of U.S. stocks in one wrapper, has grown to $424.565 billion in net assets, and is passively managed against its benchmark rather than run by a stock-picking team.

What You Actually Own Inside VTSAX

Despite the “total market” label, the top of the portfolio looks a lot like a tech fund. The 10 largest positions are NVIDIA, Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Broadcom, Meta Platforms, Tesla, Berkshire Hathaway, and Eli Lilly, in that order. Vanguard’s fact sheet did not publish individual weights in the version reviewed, but the sector mix tells the story: technology is 36.3% of the portfolio, with consumer discretionary at 13.6%, industrials at 12.6%, financials at 10.7%, and health care at 9.7%.

That is the tradeoff of a market-cap-weighted total-market fund. You own the small companies too, but the mega-caps drive the returns and set the risk. Geographic allocation is 100% United States, so international diversification has to come from somewhere else in your portfolio.

The performance record is why this fund keeps eating market share. VTSAX returned 295.1% over the 10 years ended August 21, 2026, taking a share price from $46.61 to $184.14. Over the trailing five years the fund gained 77.83%, and over the trailing one-year period it rose 22.33%. Year to date through August 21, 2026, VTSAX is up 13.51%.

Those figures are the fund’s total return in price terms; distributions arrive on top. The trailing 12-month dividend total is $1.8812 per share, paid quarterly, with the most recent payment of $0.5037 going ex-dividend on June 26, 2026. That yield is modest because the underlying index is tilted toward growth names that reinvest rather than pay out.

Concentration Is the Price of Those Returns

Every candid look at VTSAX has to acknowledge that a total-market index today is heavily exposed to a small number of very large companies. With 36.3% in technology and the top holdings dominated by AI-linked mega-caps, a sharp reversal in that group would drag the whole fund. Riding a concentrated market is fine as long as you have thought about the exit, which is the whole subject of our free bubble survivor’s handbook. The fund fell in lockstep with the market in 2022 for the same reason it soared afterward: it owns what the market owns.

The other quiet drawback is the share-class question. VTSAX is a mutual fund with a Vanguard minimum investment, while Vanguard’s ETF twin, Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (NYSEARCA:VTI), tracks the same index with no minimum beyond one share and trades intraday. For taxable accounts or investors at non-Vanguard brokerages, the ETF version is often the cleaner choice.

Who VTSAX Fits, and Who It Doesn’t

VTSAX suits long-horizon retirement savers who want one-fund U.S. equity exposure at rock-bottom cost, particularly inside a Vanguard IRA or 401(k) where the mutual-fund plumbing is frictionless. It is less appropriate for investors who need international diversification in the same wrapper, who want to dodge tech concentration, or who trade at a rival broker where transaction fees may apply to Vanguard mutual funds. Retirees drawing income will also find the yield thin.

    Funds Worth Comparing Next

    • Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI): the ETF share class of the same portfolio, useful outside Vanguard accounts.
    • Vanguard 500 Index Fund Admiral Shares (NASDAQ:VFIAX): S&P 500 only, skips small and mid caps, otherwise similar cost.
    • Schwab Total Stock Market Index Fund (NASDAQ:SWTSX): a direct rival with no investment minimum for Schwab customers.
    • Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund Admiral Shares (NASDAQ:VTIAX): the international counterweight to pair with VTSAX for global exposure.
