Bitcoin (BTC) Maintains $78K+ Support as August Delivers Strongest Gains Since November

    September 1, 20264 Mins Read

    Key Highlights

    • BTC consolidated above $78,400 following a 24% monthly advance, marking its strongest performance since November 2024
    • Among major cryptocurrencies, only HYPE posted gains with a 4% increase, while Ether, Solana, Tron and Dogecoin declined
    • MicroStrategy acquired $370 million worth of Bitcoin last week, marking its first accumulation in approximately two months
    • Bitcoin spot ETFs in the United States recorded nine consecutive days of positive flows before experiencing a $202 million withdrawal on Friday
    • Both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq delivered their strongest August returns since 2021, though September typically presents challenges for equities

During Asian trading hours on Tuesday morning, Bitcoin maintained its position above $78,400, demonstrating resilience while other risk-sensitive assets experienced weakness. The leading cryptocurrency fluctuated within a range of $77,200 to $79,200 throughout the 24-hour period, ultimately closing relatively unchanged.

The month of August proved remarkably bullish for Bitcoin. With a 24% appreciation, it marked the cryptocurrency’s most impressive monthly performance since November 2024.

HYPE emerged as the clear winner among major digital assets, climbing approximately 4% to approach $84. The broader altcoin market, however, trended lower.

Ethereum declined roughly 1% to settle just above $2,440. Solana experienced comparable losses, trading near $104. XRP maintained position just below $1.40, while BNB hovered around $693.

The steepest declines came from Tron and Dogecoin, each shedding approximately 2%. Tron settled around 33 cents while Dogecoin traded near 8 cents.

MicroStrategy re-entered the market as an active Bitcoin accumulator last week with a $370 million acquisition. This represented the company’s first buying activity in roughly two months.

Bitcoin spot exchange-traded funds in the United States experienced their most robust week of capital inflows since October 2025, though Friday’s $202 million outflow brought an end to nine consecutive sessions of positive flows. The $82,000 resistance level has consistently rejected Bitcoin’s advance attempts.

“Market’s on edge but lacks directional conviction in the short term,” said Jasper De Maere, OTC trader at Wintermute.

Open interest in perpetual futures contracts has reached its lowest point since May, leading market observers to conclude that August’s price appreciation stemmed primarily from spot market demand rather than leveraged speculation.

Equity Markets Close August on Strong Note Despite September Headwinds

American stock markets retreated on August’s final trading session. The S&P 500 slipped 0.3%, the Nasdaq declined 0.1%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 0.7%, equivalent to 373 points.

Notwithstanding the month-end weakness, all three major indices finished August in positive territory. The S&P 500 advanced 2.6% while the Nasdaq climbed 3.9%. These gains represented the strongest August showing for both benchmarks since 2021.

Market analysts identified escalating oil prices as a headwind. Brent crude advanced nearly 1% to approximately $91 per barrel following weekend US military operations near the Strait of Hormuz.

Renewed tensions involving Iran contributed to oil’s advance and intensified pressure on markets already focused on Federal Reserve policy signals.

The benchmark US 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 4.78%. Market participants now assign approximately 64% probability to a rate increase at the Fed’s September 16 policy meeting, significantly higher than the roughly 36% odds prior to Chair Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole remarks.

Historical patterns suggest September represents the most challenging month for equity performance. Both the S&P 500 and Dow typically decline an average of 1.1% during September. The Nasdaq’s average September loss stands at 0.8%.

The upcoming Friday employment report will serve as the final significant labor market indicator before the September Federal Reserve decision. Robust job data could drive yields higher and potentially push Bitcoin back toward its recent overnight low of $77,200.
