United Utilities announces £1.1m upgrades to ageing pipes

    November 29, 20252 Mins Read

A further three projects will get underway and are part of the water company’s £380m programme to upgrade more than 925km of water mains during the next five years.

More than 160km of these will be in Lancashire.

The latest projects will see the water company investing more than £1.1m to replace more than 1.7km of ageing water mains with new pipeline that is designed to last more than 100 years.

The majority of work is being carried out in Euxton, where just over a kilometre of mains are being replaced along a stretch of Wigan Road, Dawbers Lane and Old Dawbers Lane.

The 10-week project will get underway on Monday, December 1, and will complete in early February.

Smaller projects are also being carried out in the Avondale Road area of Darwen and on Heys Lane, Tockholes. Both will be completed before Christmas.

United Utilities said it was notifying customers in each area to let them know about the work.

They are also reminding customers that all United Utilities’ employees and contract partners carry ID cards and will be happy to have their identity checked.

Stephen Walker, who heads up Water Services for United Utilities in Lancashire, said: “The improvements we are delivering across Lancashire will make the water network in the county more resilient.

“These replacement mains are built to withstand high pressure and temperature variations, which will help protect against bursts.

“This work will play an important role in helping us deliver a reliable water supply to customers for decades to come.”

“We know this type of work can be disruptive, and we are doing all we can to keep that to a minimum.”

Contract partner Network Plus is carrying out the work on behalf of United Utilities.
