Huntsville City Council postpones utility rate raises

    October 11, 20241 Min Read

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – Huntsville residents will have to wait at least two more weeks to find out if Huntsville Utilities will increase their electricity rates.

Huntsville city council members decided to push the vote until the next city council meeting on Oct. 24. The proposed rate increase was 5.3 percent to your electric bill.

This is one increase that will be broken down in increments over the next 10 months.

The president and CEO of Huntsville Utilities blamed the increase on rising material costs and inflation.

In August, the Tennessee Valley Authority approved a 5.25 percent increase, both of these increases are separate and will be combined.

”The first bill I ever paid was not mine in essence, it was helping my mother pay a utility bill,” Huntsville city councilman Devyn Keith said. “What I don’t see, this is a great needs assessment is comparative that collectively somebody is considering: my bill is 500 today, when you pass this, how much will my bill be in total?”
