SAFFORD — Hot dogs and nachos will make the difference for some Safford seniors who are struggling to pay utility bills.

Employees in the Safford Utilities Department staged the annual Give From the Heart Hot Dog Sale Thursday, selling fresh-grilled hot dogs, nachos and soda. They raised $2,802.66.

“That’s double what we raised last year. We sold out of all items before 2 p.m., which has never happened before,” Assistant City Manager Eric Bejarano said in an e-mail.

“This event exceeded all expectations, and we couldn’t have done it without you. A huge thank you to everyone who came out to support, donate, and enjoy some delicious food.”

All the money raised during the sale will be used for the Give From the Heart program, which helps pay utility bills for residents 62 and older who meet specific financial guidelines.

Residents can also contribute to the Give From the Heart program when they pay their monthly utility bill. On their billing stub returned with payment, residents can choose to make a one-time contribution, round up to the nearest whole dollar, or add $1 to the payment.
