WISCONSIN (WIFR) – The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin reminds customers of utility laws and how to stay safe during excessive heat.
Wisconsin law does not allow utilities to be disconnected from occupied units when there is a heat emergency issued by the National Weather Service.
Utilities are also required to attempt to reconnect any service that has been disconnected when there is a threat to the health of the resident because of the loss of a utility combined with heat. The utility service may ask for documentation from a doctor to identify the medical emergency.
When the heat emergency is over, utilities can disconnect their services again without further notice if the payment still hasn’t been received.
Customers can save energy and keep temperatures low by:
- Keep blinds and curtains closed
- Unplug electronics when not in use
- Maintain air conditioner by getting them checked and keeping them clean
- Wash clothes and dishes early in the morning or late at night
- Turn off lights when leaving a room
Customers with questions about disconnected utilities during extreme temperatures can contact Public Service Commission Consumer Affairs Bureau at 1-800-225-7729. More information is available on the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin website.
