City Council approves Huntsville Utilities rate increase

    October 25, 20241 Min Read

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – The Huntsville City Council approved the rate increase for Huntsville Utilities on Thursday evening.

This comes as Huntsville Utilities combats the rising rates of the Tennessee Valley Authority.

Huntsville Utilities leaders say aside from the TVA increase, they needed a rate increase of their own.

The CEO of Huntsville Utilities says the increase is due to increased costs of construction and inflation as well as rising prices for equipment, tools and employee wages.

On Thursday, the Huntsville City Council approved a 5.1 percent increase to consumers’ electric bill.

The increase will be implemented in two phases.

    • Jan. 2025, consumers will see a 3.9 percent increase
    • Oct. 2025, consumers will see a 1.2 percent increase.

Officials say this is the first increase since 2018.

This increase along with the TVA increase of 0.0525 percent. The two percent increases combined will add $5 to $7 to consumers’ monthly bills.

More details will be added to this story once the meeting concludes.
