London Stock Exchange Plans Night Trading to Win Back Retail Investors from Crypto Firms

    July 20, 20262 Mins Read

London Stock Exchange plans to launch extended trading hours in early 2027. The exchange aims to win back retail investors drawn to 24/7 stock and tokenized offerings by crypto firms.

London Stock Exchange Plans 24/7 Trading in 2027

The London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) is moving forward with plans to introduce 24-hour trading, marking a major shift in how traditional financial (tradFi) markets operate.

The LSE said on July 21 it would launch a night-time trading exchange in the first half of 2027. The new exchange will operate separately from the LSEG’s main exchange. It will initially offer access to exchange-traded products such as funds tracking the UK or US stock market.

The proposed overnight session would create a separate market window, allowing investors to trade after normal trading hours. The new exchange will operate from 5 pm to 7.50 am, with a 30-minute pause between 6.30 pm and 7 pm to apply end-of-day processes.

ETF Prime host Nate Geraci claimed this shows another example of tradFi bending knees to expectations set by crypto. “Once investors realize they can have 24/7 trading, real-time settlement, easier access, etc… everything else looks antiquated,” he added.

Many British retail investors have already transitioned their capital to a top UK crypto trading platform to bypass the restricted hours of traditional domestic stock brokers.

    Rising Competition from Crypto Firms

London Stock Exchange aims to match the 24/7 availability of crypto exchanges and attract global investors. Crypto firms such as Coinbase, Kraken and Binance have expanded services to offer stocks, ETFs, and derivatives trading, which attracted younger retail investors.

Stock exchanges are now facing competition from crypto firms that offer benefits such as flexible access, real-time settlement, and 24/7 trading. Tokenization of traditional financial instruments is witnessing growing demand amid regulations.

NASDAQ, NYSE, and Cboe Global Markets have also planned to launch extended trading hours. As CoinGape reported earlier, Wall Street giants such as BlackRock, JPMorgan, and Goldman Sachs have already set to tokenize their stocks in the DTCC trial.

CME Group launched 24/7 crypto futures and options trading to compete against crypto derivatives exchanges. It is also seeking to expand 24/7 trading for WTI crude oil and gold.

Bitcoin and Ethereum prices have rebounded above $65,700 and $1930 today amid Clarity Act progress and ceasefire hopes in the US-Iran war.
