    Eagle Brewery Wharf gains unanimous support

    July 15, 20242 Mins Read

    Kingston Council Planning Committee has unanimously approved public realm improvements for Eagle Brewery Wharf, including ground resurfacing, installation of a swift tower, extended green space with new planting beds and trees, provision of play space including a play trail, installation of public seating including central raised seating island, and new metal railings along the river frontage.

    The application seeks full planning permission for public realm improvement works to Eagle Brewery Wharf, including the following:

    • A range of seating to suit users of different ages and abilities, including riverfront seating pods, seating pockets, and timber seating built into planters; A central seating island in the form of a raised timber platform;
    • Riverfront walk and new metal railings along the riverfront; New trees and planting beds distributed across the site; and a vast green edge of planting which features a meandering informal play trail;
    • The proposal includes a swift tower, strategically placed where the chimney used to be on the old brewery. This tower is designed to increase biodiversity and create a unique landmark for Eagle Brewery Wharf. Other biodiversity enhancements, such as biodiverse swales, an insect hotel, a hedgehog house, and a loggery, are also part of the proposal. These features are unique and contribute significantly to the site’s environmental sustainability. Sustainable urban drainage features are also included in the proposal. A flexible area of space dedicated to providing opportunities for public art installations and activities such as exercise classes and intergenerational play, as well as placemaking signage and details that celebrate the site’s heritage, including artwork and historic plaques.

    We had previously covered the proposal, which outlined the initial concept for the public realm improvements at Eagle Brewery Wharf. This proposal has since been refined and developed in response to feedback and further planning considerations.
