3 trees in your garden that will add value to your property

    August 28, 20254 Mins Read

While the likes of Japanese knotweed and bamboo can cause costly damage, some trees are better off in your garden to bump up the value of your property.

Ideal Home has shared tips from experts who said that adding Olive trees, Japanese maple and fruit trees can add value to your property – here’s what they said.

3 trees your garden needs to add value to your home

    Olive trees

Ideal Home said these trees are an “investment plant” with fully grown olive trees costing around £1,000.

Chris Bonnett, garden expert and owner of Gardening Express explains why these three trees will add value to your home.

Chris said: “Highly sought-after for their sculptural form and silvery-green foliage, they thrive in a range of conditions and require minimal upkeep once established.”

Olive trees can be planted now in pots or “in the ground while the soil is still warm”.

    Japanese maple

In the cooler months, Japanese maple trees, considered a staple in UK gardens, show off their red leaves.

Kyle Dunn, founder of Commercial Mortgage Guide, said: “Japanese Maples are among the most striking trees for enhancing curb appeal. The compact varieties of the Japanese Maple are especially versatile and well-suited to smaller gardens and patios, and even container planting.”

Plants that could damage the value of your home

He added: “They deliver impact without taking over valuable space. And unlike larger shade trees, they’re relatively low-maintenance, ideal for homeowners who want visual appeal without heavy upkeep.

“Buyers connect vibrant landscaping with a well-cared-for home. Research shows that well-thought-out planting design can add up to 10–15% to a property’s value.”

It’s best to plant Japanese maple trees in autumn.

    Fruit trees

While fruit trees can add value to your property, you also get to enjoy the added bonus of fresh fruit growing on your doorstep.

Chris said: “A well-established fruit tree is prized for its ability to produce seasonal fruit, as well as offering a lovely view in a garden. Whether in blossom or bearing fruit, these trees create year-round interest and can be a real focal point.

“They’re also ideal for attracting birds, bees, and other wildlife, bringing life and biodiversity into your outdoor space.”

If you add cherry trees, you can look forward to “beautiful blossoms in spring.”

Fruit trees can be planted now and into autumn.

How a well-maintained garden can add value to your property

Craig Wilson, gardening expert and co-founder of online garden retailer Gardeners Dream, spoke with Robin Edwards, property buying agent from Curetons, to offer homeowners some insight into how to increase the value of their property by using their garden.

Craig asked Robin how much a well-kept garden can add to a home. Robin explained: “Investing as little as £1,000 to £2,500 in tidying up green spaces and adding attractive features can add between 5% and 20% to a home’s value, depending on its size, location and quality of design.

Things that could invalidate your home insurance

“That means with the average UK house price being £291,000, you could add as much as £58,200 with a garden refresh.

“In urban areas where outdoor space is limited, a beautifully presented garden can be a major selling point. A simple, well-kept lawn with defined seating areas often appeals to buyers more than an overcomplicated or high-maintenance design.

“Defined seating areas, such as a basic patio or deck, with regular maintenance like mowing, weeding and pruning costs little but makes a big impact.”

Craig added: “Quick wins like repotting plants, adding a fresh layer of compost, or completely revamping faded garden furniture can instantly turn your garden into a more inviting space, making it more appealing to buyers.

“Keeping grassy areas neat and tidy can make a garden look like new. Carving out borders for flower beds that could be home to a selection of flowers, like sweet peas and azaleas, to bring in some brightness, making it appealing to the buyer’s eye.

“When adding those small touches to your garden, strategic planning goes a long way. Hardy perennials like lavender or hydrangeas add long-lasting colour, while evergreen shrubs keep the space looking structured and maintained all year round.”
