Solidigm eyes US factory for NAND chips, upstate New York considered By Investing.com

    September 18, 20262 Mins Read

Investing.com — Solidigm, a subsidiary of South Korean chipmaker , is reviewing plans to construct a NAND flash memory chip manufacturing facility in the United States, with upstate New York being considered as a potential location, according to three sources with knowledge of the discussions cited by Reuters.

The Trump administration has increased pressure on SK Hynix to expand its manufacturing operations in the US as part of broader efforts to bring semiconductor production back to American soil. The global shortage of memory chips, driven by substantial investment in AI data centers, has added urgency to capacity expansion plans.

The proposed facility would operate independently from SK Hynix’s ongoing discussions with Intel Corp (NASDAQ:INTC) regarding memory chip production at Intel’s Ohio site, the sources told Reuters.

Building a US plant would decrease Solidigm’s dependence on its single NAND production site located in Dalian, China. The move would also provide protection against possible U.S. tariffs and restrictions on chipmaking equipment exports to China, according to the Reuters report.

One source cited by Reuters indicated that no final agreement has been reached, as important project details remain under discussion. SK Hynix may proceed carefully given that US chip manufacturing costs are substantially higher than in South Korea. Trade and investment negotiations between Washington and Seoul are still ongoing, Reuters said.

SK Hynix stated that Solidigm is “reviewing various options to strengthen its business competitiveness, but no specific plans have been confirmed at this time.”
