JPMorgan cuts off lending to Aschenbrenner’s AI fund after historic losses

    September 11, 20262 Mins Read

Investing.com — JPMorgan Chase & Co () has terminated its prime brokerage lending relationship with Leopold Aschenbrenner’s hedge fund, Situational Awareness, following record-setting losses linked to a broader downturn in artificial intelligence stocks, according to reporting by the Financial Times. The decision by Wall Street’s largest bank cuts off a vital source of leverage for the mid-twenties investor, whose fund suffered the largest dollar loss in hedge fund industry history during a sharp July sell-off.

The retreat by major lenders highlights the swift recalibration of institutional risk surrounding aggressive AI-focused trading strategies that previously drove record returns. Despite losing 67% of its assets in July, Situational Awareness managed to avert a total collapse by offloading the bulk of its public market positions to Ken Griffin’s Citadel, leaving the fund up 80% on the year at the end of that month.

To rebuild his portfolio, Aschenbrenner has pivoted toward boutique Prime Broker Clear Street, seeking to re-establish market access after top-tier investment banks stepped back, according to people familiar with the matter. While held early discussions with the fund following its launch, the firm ultimately declined to establish a banking relationship, underscoring the heightened scrutiny facing high-leverage tech vehicles.

In a letter to investors following the summer liquidation, Aschenbrenner vowed to reboot the hybrid public-private strategy while adopting a more conservative risk model that limits leverage exposure. The fund is now deploying customized “flex options” on semiconductor manufacturers, including , , , and , alongside AI infrastructure providers like , enabling magnified equity exposure while capping potential downside to pre-paid premiums.

The move to fully paid derivatives allows Situational Awareness to maintain sweeping directional bets across the technology supply chain without relying on traditional leverage facilities. As the fund attempts to regain its footing, market participants are closely monitoring whether its scaled-back capital structure can successfully navigate ongoing volatility across the broader artificial intelligence landscape.
