Bargain Hunting, AI Bets, and Bold CEOs: Reading the Final Wave of Q2 Earnings

    August 17, 20263 Mins Read

    • Earnings slow down from this point forward, with only 737 global companies releasing results for Q2 this week

    • All eyes will be on the retail earnings (, , , , , ) and Nvidia results

    • Corporate uncertainty dipped back down in during the Q2 earnings season after spiking higher in Q1

From the Checkout Counter to the AI Trade: Key Earnings This Week

American households are still spending, but with an intense focus on value. While the NRF projects a record $146.8 billion in back-to-class spending, consumers are heavily relying on early promotions and midsummer sales to stretch their budgets. Solid figures confirm overall demand hasn’t stalled, but a cooling and subdued University of Michigan keep buyers selective. People are continuing to buy, but they are prioritizing essentials over discretionary items and favoring retailers with clear price advantages.

This bargain-hunting environment sets up a stark divide for upcoming earnings. Walmart (WMT) remains uniquely positioned as its dominant grocery business continues to draw trade-down traffic from higher-income households, whereas Target (TGT) faces headwinds due to its heavier mix of discretionary home and apparel goods. High interest rates and a frozen housing market continue to delay large home improvement projects for Home Depot (HD) and Lowe’s (LOW), shifting focus to minor repairs and pro sales. Meanwhile, off-price leaders TJX Companies (TJX) and Ross Stores (ROST) stand out as top beneficiaries as inflation-weary shoppers flock to discount channels for brand-name deals.

Beyond big-box retail, the broader market narrative will hinge on Nvidia (), whose upcoming earnings report serves as the ultimate litmus test for the mega-cap AI trade. Investors are closely scrutinizing whether massive hyperscaler capital expenditures are translating into sustainable enterprise returns or if the market is nearing a temporary digestion phase. While tech sentiment has experienced intermittent volatility, marked by heightened skepticism around software monetize-ability and rising system costs, demand for hardware and infrastructure remains robust as next-gen chips roll out to cloud providers. Nvidia’s performance and forward guidance will carry outsized weight, determining whether the hardware-led AI rally can regain its explosive momentum or if Wall Street will press pause on valuation multiples.

    Corporate Confidence Improves in Q2

The Late Earnings Report Index, our proprietary measure of CEO uncertainty, recorded a lower post-peak earnings season number in the second quarter after showing a slight but notable uptick in Q1 due to the instability brought by the Iran war.

The LERI tracks outlier earnings date changes among publicly traded companies with market capitalizations of $250M and higher. The LERI has a baseline reading of 100, and anything above that indicates that companies are feeling uncertain about their current and short-term prospects. A LERI reading under 100 suggests that companies feel they have a pretty good handle on the near-term.

The official post-peak season LERI reading for the Q2 earnings season (data collected in Q3) stands at 62, below the baseline reading. This suggests companies are once again feeling more certain about economic conditions than they were in Q2 2026 when the reading popped up to 73. As of August 12, there were 78 late outliers and 114 early outliers.
