Indonesia eyes zero tariffs for key commodities in US deal

..the government remains committed to prioritizing national interests while continuing to strengthen bilateral relations with the United States,

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia is optimistic that its leading national commodities will be exempt from import tariffs in the final trade agreement with United States, following a tariff reduction from 32 percent to 19 percent.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, who leads the Indonesia-US Tariff Negotiation Team, believes products that cannot be produced by the US, such as palm oil, cocoa, and rubber, will receive zero percent tariffs.

Speaking in Jakarta on Monday, Hartarto said the government has also requested special treatment for certain commodities within the health care industry supply chain, while also discussing non-tariff measures.

During the negotiation process, the government remains committed to prioritizing national interests while continuing to strengthen bilateral relations with the United States, the coordinating minister said.

Hartarto emphasized that Indonesia’s proposal to the US government aims to achieve fair and balanced trade, in line with the principles of equality and reciprocity that underpin every negotiation.

He added that the legal drafting process is currently underway to ensure all clauses comply with national regulations and international commitments, and can be implemented effectively.

The Indonesian government plans to hold further discussions at the end of November 2025, following the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit.

Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs spokesperson Haryo Limanseto said Indonesia’s approach to the tariff negotiations is measured, reflecting the country’s cautious economic diplomacy.

He added that Indonesia is pursuing a free and active economic diplomacy, ensuring that every policy and negotiation step protects national interests, strengthens economic sovereignty, and provides tangible benefits for economic growth and public welfare.

“The government is committed to ensuring that every economic agreement signed brings direct benefits to the people, strengthens the national industrial structure, and maintains Indonesia’s position as an independent and neutral strategic partner amid global geopolitical dynamics,” he said.
