Gold and Silver Outlook for Diwali: Where to invest for the year ahead and why

    October 30, 20244 Mins Read

As we approach Diwali and the auspicious Samvat 2081, investors are eyeing gold and silver as traditional investment options. In a recent conversation with Anindya Banerjee (Senior VP- Head of Research – Currency, Commodity & Interest Rates) from Kotak Securities, we explored the current trends in precious metals, outlook ahead of Diwali, and investment strategies to consider in the coming months.

Precious Metals: A Year of Stellar Performance

Over the past year, gold and silver have shown remarkable gains, with prices increasing between 20% and 40%. However, in recent weeks, both metals have seen some weakening, which Banerjee attributes to market consolidation. “As we approach the year-end and the US elections are just around the corner, we are witnessing profit-taking in the market,” he explains. The rising US interest rates and the strengthening US dollar have exerted pressure on precious metals. Banerjee adds, “Despite the headwinds, gold and silver have largely ignored the US dollar’s rise, indicating market confidence.” He believes this period of consolidation will likely give way to an upward trend post-US elections.

Gold and Silver Outlook for Samvat 2081

Banerjee remains optimistic about the prospects for gold and silver in the year ahead. He projects that gold prices could rise from their current levels of around ₹78,000 per 10 grams on the MCX to ₹87,000-₹88,000, possibly touching ₹90,000 over the next 12 months. For silver, the outlook is even more bullish, with prices expected to surge from ₹96,000 per kilogram to ₹1,30,000-₹1,35,000 on the MCX.

Investment Options for Gold and Silver

For investors looking to add gold and silver to their portfolios, Banerjee suggests considering different avenues based on their risk appetite and investment objectives. For short-term speculators, the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) offers efficient trading opportunities. For long-term investors, there are various options available:

    1. Gold ETFs: A popular choice for those who prefer liquidity and ease of trading.
    2. Sovereign Gold Bonds: Backed by the Government of India, these bonds offer interest along with gold price appreciation.
    3. Physical Gold: Suitable for traditional investors who prefer holding tangible assets.
    4. MCX Futures: Ideal for those comfortable with margin trading and looking to leverage their investments.

For silver, Banerjee suggests exploring silver ETFs or MCX futures, cautioning investors to avoid over-leveraging in futures trading.

    Why Consider Silver?

While gold has traditionally been the preferred choice, Banerjee advocates for a slight overweight allocation in silver, given its dual role as a precious and industrial metal. “Silver offers exposure to both gold and industrial metals, making it a better investment option for those with a higher risk appetite,” he notes.

    Optimal Portfolio Allocation

When it comes to portfolio allocation, Banerjee recommends dedicating 15% of one’s portfolio to precious metals, with 60% allocated to silver and 40% to gold. This allocation strikes a balance between stability and the potential for higher returns.

Key Levels to Watch in Domestic Markets

For the domestic market, Banerjee advises keeping an eye on gold prices around ₹77,000-₹77,500 on the MCX as a good accumulation zone, with a stop-loss below ₹76,000. He expects gold to resume its upward trend after the US elections, potentially reaching ₹80,000 or higher by year-end. In silver, he suggests buying opportunities around ₹94,000-₹95,000, with a stop-loss below ₹93,000. He anticipates silver prices could test ₹1,00,000 in the coming weeks.

Investing in Physical Gold: What to Look For

During the festive season, investors often gravitate towards physical gold. Banerjee advises ensuring the purity of gold through hallmarking and other certifications. However, for those seeking a safer alternative, non-physical options like ETFs offer guaranteed purity and ease of trading.

    Systematic Investment in Precious Metals

Banerjee emphasizes the importance of adopting a systematic investment approach (SIP) to navigate market volatility. “While gold and silver are poised to perform well, it’s better to invest systematically over time rather than making large one-time purchases,” he suggests.
