Strategy’s Michael Saylor Is Making a Strong Case Against a Proposed New Bitcoin Upgrade. Here’s What That Means for Bitcoin.

    August 6, 20263 Mins Read

This summer, a surprisingly high-spirited debate has been taking place about the future of Bitcoin (BTC +0.19%). At the heart of this debate is Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 110 (“BIP-110”), which has the potential to become the biggest change to Bitcoin in nearly a decade.

What’s particularly noteworthy is that one of the loudest voices in the debate has been Michael Saylor of Strategy (MSTR -0.98%). His company now owns approximately 4% of all Bitcoin in circulation, and he’s understandably concerned about what happens to his $54 billion investment in Bitcoin.

What does the involvement of Michael Saylor mean for the average crypto investor regarding Bitcoin?

What is BIP-110, and why does it matter?

BIP-110 is a proposal for a “soft fork” of the Bitcoin blockchain. At its core, BIP-110 is an attempt to prevent users from embedding large amounts of non-financial information on the Bitcoin blockchain.

BIP-110 hits at a major philosophical premise behind the launch of Bitcoin. Back in 2008, Satoshi Nakamoto created Bitcoin as a peer-to-peer currency, intended for financial transactions only. From this perspective, embedding anything other than financial data on the blockchain is really just a form of spam.

Thus, the rise of Ordinals back in January 2023 — when users began to inscribe images, text, and video into Bitcoin blocks — is seen as a subversion of the original intent of Bitcoin.

    The debate over BIP-110

On one side of the debate are the Bitcoin purists — the people who believe that blocks on the Bitcoin blockchain should only contain financial transaction data, and nothing more.

On the other side of the debate are people like Strategy’s Michael Saylor, who believe it’s not the job of Bitcoin to decide which blocks are “good” or “bad.” Doing so sets a dangerous precedent and could fundamentally change how Bitcoin works in the future.

Saylor feels so strongly about it, in fact, that he recently penned an online essay called “110 Reasons BIP-110 Is a Bad Idea.” Not surprisingly, the essay went viral, mostly because he was able to translate very complex issues into terms that the average investor could understand.

Who gets to decide the future of Bitcoin?

For crypto investors, the debate over BIP-110 is an important one. There have been several forks of the Bitcoin blockchain in the past, and it’s never really certain what will happen when one occurs.

The last thing you want is for the value of your Bitcoin holdings to evaporate overnight. You also don’t want to end up with a different asset from the one you are already holding, such as what happened with the launch of Bitcoin Cash (BCH -0.28%) in 2017.

This is a debate worth watching. As of now, it looks like BIP-110 will fail — it simply doesn’t have the consensus of the Bitcoin ecosystem. And that likely means a major victory for Michael Saylor. Given his economic stake in Bitcoin, it’s safe to bet that this is a major victory for Bitcoin investors as well.
