Strategy (MSTR) Stock Climbs 2.6% After $25M Preferred Stock Buyback, Skips Bitcoin Purchase

    July 27, 20263 Mins Read

    Key Highlights

    • MSTR shares advanced more than 2% during premarket hours Monday
    • The firm offloaded 5.4M Class A common shares, securing $544.5M via its ATM offering
    • Strategy repurchased 288,930 shares of STRC preferred stock for $25M
    • No Bitcoin acquisitions for the third week running, with total holdings steady at 843,775 BTC
    • Cash reserves in USD expanded to $3.75B from $3.225B week-over-week

Between July 20 and July 26, Strategy offloaded 5,429,160 shares of Class A common stock, bringing in $544.5 million in net proceeds via its at-the-market equity program.

Shares traded up 2.63% to $94.08 during early Monday session activity, while STRC preferred stock gained 2.3% to reach $88.90 before the opening bell.

Simultaneously, the firm executed a buyback of 288,930 STRC preferred shares valued at $25 million. These transactions were outlined in an SEC Form 8-K submission dated Monday.

Bitcoin Acquisition Freeze Continues Into Third Week

Strategy refrained from purchasing or selling Bitcoin for the third week in a row. The company’s cryptocurrency holdings stand unchanged at 843,775 BTC, accumulated at an average cost basis of $75,476 per token, totaling $63.69 billion in aggregate spend.

We repurchased 288,930 shares of $STRC for $25M at an average price of $86.52 per share. We intend to remain a regular, disciplined buyer of STRC below $100. More at deeper discounts, less as STRC nears $100. Another $975M remains available for our prefs. https://t.co/cpUNofIcBy

    — Michael Saylor (@saylor) July 27, 2026

Bitcoin was hovering between $64,911 and $64,971 when the filing was submitted — trading beneath Strategy’s average acquisition cost.

The firm’s dollar reserves grew to $3.75 billion by July 26, climbing from $3.225 billion reported in the previous week. These funds are allocated for preferred dividend distributions and debt service obligations.

The preferred share repurchase attracted notable interest after executive chairman Michael Saylor posted “We’re gonna need another color” on X this past Sunday. Some market watchers interpreted the message as a signal toward additional preferred stock initiatives, though no official clarification followed.

The STRC security represents a 9.0% Series A Perpetual Stretch Preferred Stock, with the buyback lowering the available supply of this financial instrument.

Saylor Sparks Fresh Controversy Over Bitcoin’s Future With Banks

Over the weekend, Saylor ignited controversy by asserting that Bitcoin’s expansion hinges on collaboration with established banking institutions. He stated on X that excluding banks would effectively lock out the vast majority of prospective users.

His remarks triggered backlash from Bitcoin purists who referenced Satoshi Nakamoto’s foundational white paper, which envisions BTC as a peer-to-peer digital currency system built specifically to eliminate middlemen.

The discussion highlighted a philosophical divide within the Bitcoin ecosystem between advocates who believe banking partnerships are essential for widespread acceptance and idealists who consider such integration antithetical to the protocol’s founding principles.

Strategy’s choice to allocate capital toward preferred stock redemption instead of expanding its Bitcoin treasury for three consecutive weeks has led certain market observers to question whether the company is recalibrating its strategic approach, particularly given that aggressive BTC accumulation has defined its corporate narrative and equity valuation.

BTC-USD declined 0.72% in pre-market trading Monday morning.
