Metaplanet’s Business Head Phil Geiger Departs to Pursue New Bitcoin Ventures

    September 4, 20264 Mins Read

    Key Highlights

    • Phil Geiger has departed Metaplanet after serving as Head of Business Development.
    • He is joining Verify Wealth as Chief Marketing Officer and will also serve as President of the Bitcoin Scholars Fund.
    • The leadership move comes as Metaplanet continues to expand its Bitcoin treasury strategy.

A major leadership departure has happened in Metaplanet. Phil Geiger, who served as Head of Business Development at the leading Japanese Bitcoin treasury company Metaplanet, has announced his departure from the company as he takes on new roles across the Bitcoin ecosystem.

Geiger shared the update on LinkedIn, saying he had “wrapped up” his time with Metaplanet after getting a “front-row seat” to the inner workings of a public Bitcoin treasury company.

He is now taking on three separate roles, including Chief Marketing Officer at Bitcoin-focused financial planning firm Verify Wealth, President of the Bitcoin Scholars Fund, and an advisory role at Bitcoin transaction security company Branta.

“I’m grateful for the experience diving deep into Japan’s bitcoin ecosystem and getting a front-row seat to the inner workings of a public bitcoin treasury company,” Geiger said in his post.

Metaplanet’s Business Head Leaves the Company

Geiger joined Metaplanet as Head of Business Development last year, at a time when the Tokyo-listed company was rapidly expanding its Bitcoin treasury strategy. In his initial announcement, he said one of his first areas of focus would be growing Bitcoin.JP, which Metaplanet had acquired.

During his tenure, Geiger was also closely involved in communicating Metaplanet’s Bitcoin strategy. He previously highlighted how the company’s approach differed from Strategy, particularly its focus on generating income from Bitcoin volatility before adding the asset to its treasury.

Metaplanet has since continued to build one of the largest corporate Bitcoin holdings globally, while positioning itself as a Bitcoin-focused financial platform rather than simply a company holding BTC on its balance sheet.

It comes at a time when Metaplanet is expanding globally. It recently acquired Super League calling it bridge for US-Japan capital.

What Are his Next Bitcoin Ventures

Geiger’s next chapter will remain firmly focused on Bitcoin.

At Verify Wealth, he will work alongside founder and colleague Jessy Gilger to grow a financial planning business aimed at Bitcoin holders. Geiger said the firm is refining a playbook for “high-conviction bitcoiners”. He plans to build on its existing experience in Bitcoin-focused financial planning.

He is also stepping up as President of the Bitcoin Scholars Fund. According to the organization, the fund focuses on expanding Bitcoin education and supporting programs for students.

His third role is with Branta, where he will advise a team working on Bitcoin transaction verification and security. Branta’s technology is designed to help users verify who they are sending Bitcoin to before a transaction is completed, without taking custody of the funds.

Geiger’s move comes as Bitcoin companies increasingly expand beyond simply buying and holding BTC. Financial advisory, education and transaction security have all emerged as growing parts of the broader Bitcoin economy.

For Metaplanet, the departure marks a change in its business development leadership as the company continues to pursue its aggressive Bitcoin accumulation strategy.

For Geiger, meanwhile, the move appears to be less of a step away from Bitcoin and more of a shift toward building across different parts of the ecosystem.

“Give these teams a follow!” Geiger wrote while announcing his next moves, adding that he remains “wildly bullish on bitcoin.”
