Marathon Digital Holdings buys 1,292 Bitcoin for $98.6M

    September 15, 20263 Mins Read

Marathon Digital Holdings, the publicly listed Bitcoin miner known by its ticker MARA, picked up 1,292 BTC for roughly $98.6 million, working out to about $76,347 per coin. The purchase was executed through FalconX, an institutional prime broker, and surfaced via on-chain analytics from Lookonchain before any formal company announcement.

The timing matters. MARA spent the first quarter of 2026 offloading a substantial portion of its Bitcoin reserves, selling approximately 20,880 BTC for around $1.5 billion. The company channeled proceeds toward operational expenses, liquidity management, and a strategic push into artificial intelligence and high-performance computing infrastructure.

From seller to buyer: MARA’s shifting treasury strategy

The Q1 sales cut deep into MARA’s holdings. The company entered late 2025 holding roughly 53,822 BTC, a figure that ranked it among the largest corporate Bitcoin holders in the world. By March 2026, that number had dropped to approximately 35,303 BTC, a reduction of more than a third.

The September 15 purchase is not MARA’s first move back toward accumulation. The company quietly bought 1,000 BTC through the same FalconX channel back in June 2026, signaling that the sell-heavy posture was transitional rather than permanent.

As of early 2026 filings, MARA’s Bitcoin treasury was valued somewhere between $2.4 billion and $2.7 billion depending on where prices sat at any given moment. That range places MARA in rarefied company, occasionally trading the title of second-largest public Bitcoin holder with MicroStrategy depending on the week and the market.

What FalconX’s role tells us about how big players actually move

The fact that both the June and September purchases flowed through FalconX is worth pausing on. Institutional prime brokers exist precisely to let large buyers move serious capital without immediately tipping off the open market. FalconX allows MARA to source liquidity across multiple counterparties simultaneously, keeping slippage low and execution cleaner. The repeated use of the same broker across two separate purchase events suggests this is now a deliberate operational playbook rather than a one-off arrangement.

Lookonchain’s on-chain identification of the transaction is a reminder that even when institutions use off-exchange execution, the final Bitcoin settlement still lands on a transparent public ledger.

Reading the signals for the broader market

What to watch: whether MARA follows this purchase with additional disclosures about its revised treasury target, how its AI and HPC infrastructure bets are maturing alongside the renewed Bitcoin accumulation, and whether other major miners interpret this as a cue to rebuild their own reserves ahead of the next potential demand cycle.
