California pension fund holds $35.5M in Strategy shares for Bitcoin exposure

    August 18, 20263 Mins Read

The California Public Employees’ Retirement System, better known as CalPERS, reported holding roughly $35.5 million worth of Strategy Inc. shares. That single line item on a regulatory filing quietly gave more than 2 million California state workers and retirees exposure to Bitcoin, whether they asked for it or not.

CalPERS is the largest public pension fund in the United States, managing retirement benefits for everyone from firefighters to DMV clerks. Strategy Inc., formerly known as MicroStrategy, is the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin on the planet, sitting on more than 629,000 BTC. Owning Strategy stock is, for all practical purposes, a leveraged bet on Bitcoin wrapped inside equity market packaging.

    A position that’s been on a ride

The $35.5 million figure represents a snapshot in time, and it’s worth noting that this position has been far larger. CalPERS’ Strategy holdings peaked at over $144 million during more favorable market conditions. By late 2025, the value had retreated to around $80 million as both Strategy’s share price and Bitcoin itself fluctuated.

In the fourth quarter of 2025, the fund added 22,475 shares to its Strategy position.

    Why Strategy, not Bitcoin directly

By purchasing Strategy shares, CalPERS gains exposure to Bitcoin’s price movements through a publicly traded equity. The stock trades on Nasdaq, files with the SEC, and comes with all the governance structures that pension fund trustees can point to during board meetings.

Strategy’s entire corporate identity has essentially merged with its Bitcoin treasury strategy. The company, led by executive chairman Michael Saylor, has accumulated its massive BTC position through a combination of cash purchases and debt-funded acquisitions over several years. Its stock price tends to amplify Bitcoin’s moves, both up and down, which makes it a higher-beta play on the underlying asset.

That amplification cuts both ways. The journey from $144 million to $35.5 million in CalPERS’ holdings illustrates the volatility risk baked into this approach.

    Strategy’s own moves add context

Strategy itself made news recently by selling 32 BTC for $2.5 million in May 2026. That was the company’s first Bitcoin sale since 2022, breaking a long streak of exclusively accumulating the asset.

At $35.5 million, the Strategy position represents a tiny fraction of CalPERS’ total assets under management, which historically run into the hundreds of billions.
