British Investor Recovers 61 Bitcoin Worth £3.3 Million After 12-Year Legal Battle

    August 30, 20263 Mins Read

    TLDR:

    • British investor Chris recovers 61 Bitcoin lost since Intersango’s 2014 exchange collapse.
    • Legal firm CEL Solicitors used ownership records and US court filings to reclaim funds.
    • Recovered Bitcoin holding is now valued at approximately £3.3 million, or $4.7 million.
    • Investor plans to buy a larger family home while keeping the rest of his Bitcoin.

A British investor has recovered 61 Bitcoin worth roughly £3.3 million, more than a decade after the exchange holding his funds collapsed.

Chris, who bought the coins in December 2011, regained access this year with help from legal specialists CEL Solicitors. The case shows how legal routes can unlock crypto assets thought permanently lost.

How the Bitcoin Was Lost for Over a Decade

Chris entered the Bitcoin market early. In December 2011, he spent £1,500 on the digital currency through Britcoin, the United Kingdom’s first cryptocurrency exchange. At the time, each coin traded at around £2.94, giving him a total of 61 Bitcoin.

The exchange later changed its name to Intersango. By 2014, Chris’s holding had grown in value to about £4,000. That same year, the platform shut down amid financial difficulties, cutting off his access to the account entirely.

For the next 12 years, Chris could not touch his funds. He watched Bitcoin’s price climb steadily across global markets while his own coins sat frozen inside a defunct exchange. He later described the experience as the most difficult period of his investing life.

Unlike many lost-crypto stories involving forgotten passwords or damaged hardware wallets, this case centered on ownership rights.

The private keys remained under the control of the exchange’s former operators, turning the matter into a legal dispute rather than a technical recovery effort.

Legal Action Leads to Full Recovery

After repeated attempts to contact former Intersango operators failed, Chris decided to pursue a formal legal claim earlier this year. His wife reportedly encouraged him to take the step, after years of the funds remaining untouched.

He hired CEL Solicitors, a British law firm, to handle the case. The legal team used ownership records and court documents, including filings from related United States proceedings, to establish his claim over the coins.

Through this process, CEL Solicitors were able to trace the Bitcoin, confirm Chris as the rightful owner, and secure the release of the full 61 coins.

The recovery marks one of the more notable cases of long-dormant crypto assets being reclaimed through legal channels rather than technical means.

With Bitcoin’s price having risen sharply since 2014, the recovered coins are now valued at approximately £3.3 million, equivalent to about $4.7 million.

Chris said he plans to use part of the funds to buy a larger family home, one that can accommodate a family member with disabilities.

He confirmed he intends to keep the remainder of his Bitcoin holding rather than sell it in full. The case adds to a growing list of examples where persistence and legal support have helped investors recover crypto assets once considered permanently inaccessible.
