Bitcoin (BTC) Price: Open Interest Falls 4.39% as BTC Stalls Below $81,337

    August 28, 20263 Mins Read

    TLDR

    • Bitcoin trades at $79,904, up 1.43% in 24 hours, but momentum has flattened just below $81,337 resistance.
    • RSI sits at 80.21 and MACD has gone flat, both signs the rally may be running out of steam.
    • Futures open interest fell 4.39% in a day, showing traders are closing positions rather than adding new ones.
    • Glassnode data shows 1.05 million BTC held by long-term holders sits between $83,000 and $86,000, a key price zone to watch.
    • U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs pulled in $2.23 billion over seven days with no outflow days at all.

Bitcoin is trading at $79,904 after a 1.43% gain over the past day. The price has pushed well above its short-term averages, sitting about $9,400 over its 20-day average.

That kind of move doesn’t usually last without a pause. Right now, price is stuck in a tight range between $78,754 and $81,478.

Several momentum indicators point to a market that has gotten ahead of itself. The RSI reads 80.21, deep in overbought territory. The MACD line and signal line have converged at zero, meaning buying pressure has stalled.

What the Data Shows Under the Hood

Open interest in BTC futures dropped 4.39% over the last day even as price held steady. That usually means traders are taking profits, not adding new bets.

The picture gets more interesting when you split retail from larger traders. Retail accounts are net short right now, with just over half positioned against the rally.

Bigger, so-called “smart money” accounts show the opposite. Slightly over half of top traders are positioned long. Funding rates remain close to neutral, so this isn’t a market driven by heavy leverage.

Support sits at $80,045, then $78,612, then $77,320. Resistance levels sit at $81,337, $82,770, and $84,744.

    The Bigger Supply Picture

Zooming out, on-chain firm Glassnode points to a larger question for Bitcoin’s recovery. Long-term holders control 1.05 million BTC priced between $83,000 and $86,000.

This is the first major cluster of coins sitting above the current spot price near $79,000. If those holders keep their coins, the path higher stays open. If they sell at breakeven, the rally could slow down.

Glassnode also flagged August 19 as the largest single-day short liquidation event since 2019. Short positions made up 85% of all liquidations during that squeeze.

Futures open interest fell 11% in coin terms during that stretch. That points to leverage being removed from the market rather than replaced with new bets.

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs added $2.23 billion in net inflows over seven days, according to Glassnode. There was not a single day of outflows during that stretch.

The strongest single day of ETF creation during that run was the largest since January 14, 2026. Even so, daily trading turnover during the week averaged about $2.4 billion.

That is roughly half the pace seen in January and February. It is also about a third below where turnover stood a year earlier in August.

Bitcoin’s next move now depends on two things happening together. ETF inflows need to stay positive, and the market needs enough demand to absorb the long-term holder supply sitting between $83,000 and $86,000.

As of 07:00 UTC on August 28, 2026, Bitcoin remains just under $80,000, holding near its recent pivot point without a clear break in either direction.
