SpaceTrade reinvents crypto play, targets payments, utilities, wider consumer adoption

    September 5, 20264 Mins Read

SpaceTrade is repositioning its business beyond cryptocurrency trading, targeting everyday payments and utility services as it seeks to broaden digital-asset adoption among Nigerians.

The company’s new strategy, unveiled alongside a new brand identity and headquarters, will see the platform expand its services to include airtime purchases, electricity bill payments, gift cards and other everyday financial utilities.

The shift marks a broader attempt by the crypto-focused company to move digital assets from predominantly investment and trading activities into practical transactions used in consumers’ daily lives.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lagos, Emmanuel Amure, chief executive officer of SpaceTrade, said accessibility, education and practical use cases would form the foundation of the company’s new direction.

According to Amure, cryptocurrency adoption remains constrained by limited understanding among potential users, making it necessary to simplify access while demonstrating how digital assets can solve everyday financial needs.

The company’s strategy comes as Nigeria’s digital finance ecosystem continues to evolve, with cryptocurrency platforms increasingly operating at the intersection of digital payments, fintech and emerging technologies.

Oluwatobi Odunaiya, chief technology officer and co-founder of SpaceTrade, said the rebrand was designed partly to remove the complexity that has kept many potential users away from the cryptocurrency market.

He said the company was placing greater emphasis on education through its digital platforms and Space Insights blog, where users can access information explaining cryptocurrency, digital assets and the operation of SpaceTrade’s services.

The company is also targeting younger Nigerians through a campus ambassador programme aimed at building familiarity with digital assets among university students.

Odunaiya said the programme was being rolled out in phases, beginning with 10 universities, before expanding to additional public and private institutions across the country.

The move reflects the growing importance of younger, digitally connected consumers to the future of Nigeria’s digital economy, while also giving crypto platforms an avenue to introduce potential users to digital assets before they become regular investors or customers.

Beyond consumer services, SpaceTrade said it plans to expand its existing Web3 offerings and explore emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, as it seeks a larger position in the digital financial ecosystem.

However, the company’s expansion comes against the backdrop of an evolving regulatory environment for digital assets in Nigeria, making compliance and consumer protection increasingly important for operators.

Amure said SpaceTrade had implemented know-your-customer procedures, data protection measures and other security controls to protect users and their assets.

The company’s repositioning therefore goes beyond a visual rebrand, signalling a shift in its commercial strategy from a platform primarily associated with buying and selling digital assets to one seeking to integrate cryptocurrency into routine consumer transactions.

For SpaceTrade, the bigger challenge will be converting crypto awareness into sustained usage by showing Nigerians that digital assets can serve purposes beyond trading and speculation.

The company is betting that easier access, practical utilities, consumer education and stronger engagement with young Nigerians can help unlock a wider market for crypto-enabled financial services.
