ensex Today, Nifty 50 | Stock Market Highlights – Find here all the highlights related to Sensex, Nifty, BSE, NSE, share prices and Indian stock markets for 31st August 2026
The top gainers on the Nifty 50 were ICICI Bank (up 1.43%), Grasim (0.98%), Reliance (0.75%), Bajaj Auto (0.70%), and M&M (0.39%).
The laggards were Adani Enterprises (down 7.01%), Adani Ports (3.99%), Eternal (3.11%), Tata Steel (2.69%) and Infosys (1.62% lower).
Of the 3,589 stocks that traded on the NSE today, 1219 advanced while 2,282 decline.
Weak trends in global markets and foreign fund outflows dented investor sentiment.
India’s new mechanism to arrive on closing price in stocks (CAS) with futures and options, coupled with an MSCI index rebalancing, acted as a stress test for the new system.
The Indian rupee rose 0.2 per cent versus the US dollar to 95.1625, as inflows related to a stock index rejig further pushed the currency higher after the central bank stepped in again to support in early part of the session.
The benchmark 10-year bond was quoted at 99.895 rupees, with the yield up 4 bps at 6.953%.
Earlier, domestic shares traded flat through midday as an escalation in the Iran war pushed crude prices higher, with investors bracing for potential volatility from an MSCI index rejig and the country’s new stock closing system.
Global sentiment weakened after US forces struck two Iranian launchers, marking the first known American strikes on Iran since late July. Brent crude was trading around $90 a barrel, up about 2 per cent amid renewed US-Iran tensions.
Dr. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Ltd, said the market was facing a few headwinds at the start of the week. He said sentiments had turned slightly negative following Fed chief Kevin Warsh’s statement that if inflation persists above the Fed’s long-term target, “we have work to do”.
According to Vijayakumar, the market has interpreted this as an indication of a rate hike at the FOMC meeting scheduled for September 15-16, with the consequent rise in bond yields negative for equity markets. He also pointed to renewed US-Iran tensions pushing Brent crude above $90.

Colin Shah, MD, Kama Jewelry, on the gold price correction and near-term outlook:
“The week kicked off with gold under pressure, witnessing a sharp correction of nearly 2% on the MCX, influenced by aggressive profit-taking and soft global cues. While short-term technical selling is dominating the current price trajectory, this pullback can actually be treated as a healthy consolidation rather than a structural downturn.
Domestically, this correction in prices serves as a timely catalyst as the festive season has already started and the wedding buying season is fast approaching too. This dip will serve as a lucrative opportunity for consumers, enabling them to make the most of the moment given the volatility in price momentum. For retailers too, this serves as an attractive entry point to accelerate inventory restocking.
Internationally, the ease in bullion rates comes as a marginal relief for manufacturers, coupled with lower input costs that enhance price competitiveness in key overseas corridors like the US and the GCC, giving the much-needed boost for steady pre-holiday order fulfilment. Overall, it remains vital to remain watchful of the headwinds and make real-time decisions at both a customer and business level.”

Quote: Manav Modi Commodities Analyst Motilal Oswal Financial services Ltd
Gold prices fell nearly 3% on Friday, marking their sharpest decline in weeks, as a stronger U.S. dollar and rising Treasury yields weighed on bullion after Fed chair Warsh’s first Jackson Hole speech was interpreted as hawkish by markets. Governor Warsh reiterated that underlying inflation has not “meaningfully improved” and stressed that restoring price stability remains the Fed’s primary objective, leading traders to significantly increase expectations of a September rate hike.
According to CME FedWatch, the probability of a 25 bps hike in September jumped to around 57% from nearly 35% a day earlier. The repricing pushed U.S. Treasury yields higher, with 10Y yield climbing toward 4.7%, while the dollar posted its strongest weekly gain in several weeks.
Higher yields and a stronger dollar typically pressure bullion. Despite the sharp correction, gold’s broader support from the “debasement trade” remains intact, with investors continuing to monitor concerns over U.S. fiscal deficits, rising government debt and Treasury market intervention. Geopolitical tensions also remain elevated after reports of Iranian attacks on U.S. forces in Jordan raised fears of further escalation in the Middle East.
Market attention now shifts to upcoming U.S. labor market and inflation data, along with key economic releases from major economies, which will be crucial in shaping expectations for the Fed’s next policy move and the near-term outlook for gold.

Oil Gains as US Hits Hormuz Targets and Threatens More Sanctions
Oil gained as fresh fighting flared up in the Middle East, and the US signaled increased economic pressure against Iran’s trading partners.
Brent for November rose above $90 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate was near $85. The US struck Iranian rocket launchers preparing to send mines into the Strait of Hormuz, according to Central Command. Jordan’s army intercepted eight missiles after Tehran’s military said it had attacked targets linked to American forces in the kingdom, Agence France-Presse said.
Treasury Scott Bessent said Washington was likely to unveil new secondary sanctions on Iran on a weekly basis, “starting with the banks,” according to an interview with Reuters at the weekend. The next step may involve cutting off an institution entirely from the dollar-based financial system, Bessent said. (Bloomberg)

Japan’s Nikkei slides nearly 2% following hawkish Fed comments
Japan’s Nikkei share gauge fell nearly 2% on Monday on rising expectations for central bank rate hikes to tame inflation.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 fell 1.97% to 65,096.63 in early trading. The broader Topix slipped 0.84% to 4,111.71.
Wall Street’s main indexes ended lower last week after Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh reiterated the central bank’s focus on fighting inflation, increasing prospects for an interest rate hike.
Markets have priced in a near certainty that the Bank of Japan will raise rates at its meeting next month. Yields on Japanese government bonds rose to fresh multi-decade highs on Monday. (Reuters)

Asian Stocks Drop on Hawkish Warsh Tone
Asian stocks dropped and the dollar held its gains after hawkish comments from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh strengthened bets on an interest-rate hike next month. Oil climbed as Middle East tensions intensified.
The dollar traded in a narrow range against major peers after posting its biggest gain in about a month on Friday following Warsh’s remarks.
Elsewhere, Brent crude climbed 1.4% to $89.30 a barrel after the US military on Sunday struck Iranian rocket launchers that were preparing to send mines into the Strait of Hormuz, ending weeks of relative calm.
The moves showed a cautious start to the week after Warsh vowed in his Jackson Hole speech on Friday to bring inflation back to target, prompting traders to lift the probability of a September rate hike to 60%. Adding to the pressure, escalating Middle East tensions drove oil higher, raising the risk of another bout of price pressures. (Bloomberg)
