Bitcoin (BTC) Tumbles Below $78K as Fed’s Warsh Delivers Hawkish Jackson Hole Remarks

    August 28, 20264 Mins Read

    TLDR

    • BTC plunged to $78,442 following Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s cautious remarks at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium
    • Warsh dismissed recent CPI and PCE improvements, stating inflation hasn’t “meaningfully improved”
    • Market expectations for a September interest rate increase surged to 59%, a significant jump from 35% just one day earlier
    • Bitcoin ETF products experienced $202M in withdrawals on August 28, breaking a nine-day positive flow pattern
    • Despite the decline, BTC maintains a 26.35% monthly gain, representing its strongest August showing since 2017

The leading cryptocurrency experienced a sharp downturn on Friday following Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh’s inaugural keynote address at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium, with BTC touching a low of $78,442 on the Bitstamp exchange.

Warsh adopted a measured stance regarding inflation trends. He downplayed recent favorable Consumer Price Index and Personal Consumption Expenditures figures, asserting they don’t indicate that core inflation patterns have “meaningfully improved,” while restating the central bank’s commitment to the 2% inflation objective.

Market participants interpreted the address as decidedly hawkish. Expectations for a September interest rate increase intensified, with the CME FedWatch probability indicator jumping above 59%, compared to approximately 35% recorded the previous session.

    🚨 BREAKING:

🇺🇸 Fed Chair Kevin Warsh sounded hawkish at Jackson Hole

    – Inflation is still too high
    – The 2% target remains the priority
    – The economy is still strong
    – Rates may not be restrictive enough
    – Rate cuts could be harder to come by

Additionally, Warsh declared the conclusion of forward guidance as a standard Federal Reserve mechanism, characterizing it as a strategy that has “overstayed its welcome” following its implementation during the 2008 Global Financial Crisis.

The U.S. dollar benchmark strengthened by 0.5% during the trading session. Bitcoin experienced a 3.4% decline to approximately $77,494, retreating from an intraday peak of $81,330.

Market analyst Ted Pillows observed on the X platform that Bitcoin was consolidating around the $80,000 threshold with diminishing upward momentum. He indicated that a correction toward the $74,000–$75,000 range could materialize before any renewed bullish movement.

    ETF Flows Reverse Course

Bitcoin exchange-traded fund products registered $202 million in net withdrawals on August 28, based on SoSoValue analytics cited by Wu Blockchain, terminating a nine-session run of positive inflows.

Ethereum-based ETF products demonstrated contrasting behavior, posting $102 million in net deposits and pushing their consecutive inflow sequence to 10 trading days.

Factors Behind Previous Week’s 22% Surge

Bitcoin’s present retracement follows an impressive 22.2% weekly advance — representing its strongest seven-day performance in more than three years.

The previous surge was propelled by positive U.S. regulatory shifts, increased institutional capital allocation, and the emerging debasement narrative. Market participants redirected funds into store-of-value assets including gold and digital currencies as U.S. government debt surpassed $40 trillion and Treasury yields experienced sharp increases.

Crypto trading firm QCP Capital emphasized that sustaining BTC levels above $83,000 requires robust derivatives market conditions. The firm highlighted the importance of keeping funding rates moderate while ensuring open interest expands organically, avoiding spikes driven by excessive leverage accumulation.

As of this writing, BTC has registered a 26.35% monthly increase according to CoinGlass metrics, representing its most impressive August performance since 2017.
