How Finance Leaders Can Build Stronger Stakeholder Trust

Trust becomes especially valuable when financial and regulatory conditions are difficult to predict. For finance leaders, building that trust requires stakeholders to understand not only what the numbers say but what they mean, how the business is responding and what could happen next.

Here, members from Forbes Finance Council each share how they are using targeted communication, scenario planning, forecasting and other strategies to build stronger stakeholder relationships.

    1. Focus Stakeholder Communication On What Matters Most

Finance leaders must rely on a strategy of hyper-targeted metric alignment and radical transparency. Rather than communicating generic financial reports to everyone, identify the specific, high-priority metrics that matter most to each stakeholder group. Then build tailored communication cadences to deliver against those numbers. – Shailaja Vemuluri, Synopsys

    2. Show Stakeholders How The Business Will Adapt

Embedding scenario planning into stakeholder communications is the most effective way to build trust amid uncertainty. Moving beyond static reporting to show how the business will adapt across different macro environments demonstrates deep competence. This forward-looking transparency gives lenders, auditors and investors clarity on how leadership will respond to future shifts. – Aswin Saravanan, Qualtrics

    3. Keep The Financial Story Consistent Across Audiences

Most finance leaders subtly tailor the narrative—optimistic to investors, conservative to lenders, technical to auditors. The ones who build real trust tell every stakeholder the identical version of the story, in the same room if possible. Consistency across audiences is rarer than people think, and stakeholders talk to each other. – Ali Nanji, BPC Banking Technologies

    4. Use Credible Forecasts To Build Confidence

Good forecasting is good risk management. By maintaining credible forecasts, finance can identify risks early, communicate potential outcomes transparently and demonstrate control over uncertainty. That visibility builds confidence with lenders, auditors, investors and other stakeholders because there are fewer surprises and clearer plans for responding when conditions change. Invest in your forecasting process and the people who run it! – Bryan Lapidus, Association for Financial Professionals

    5. Demonstrate How Finance Is Managing Risk

One strategy is to treat stakeholder communication as part of financial resilience. Finance leaders should provide a clear view of liquidity, credit exposure and payment behavior, while showing how the business is protecting working capital and adjusting when conditions change. That level of transparency helps lenders, auditors and investors see that finance leaders are not simply reporting risk, but actively managing it. – Joel Campbell, TreviPay

    6. Give Stakeholders The Story Behind The Numbers

The best strategy is to be consistent, transparent and realistic in expectations. It’s also helpful to tell the story behind the numbers. Financial reporting alone cannot fully unveil the strategy or the work in progress. Lenders, auditors, investors and regulators are more interested in what’s behind the numbers than we give them credit for. – Kevin Cohee, OneUnited Bank

    7. Prepare Stakeholders For Regulatory Uncertainty

Finance leaders should communicate early and transparently, especially as businesses face shifting federal rules and state regulations. They should provide stakeholders with realistic forecasts, compliance plans and downside scenarios. Consistent reporting builds credibility even when the regulatory outcome remains uncertain. – Joseph Lustberg, Upwise Capital

    8. Pair Difficult News With A Clear Path Forward

Sitting on an audit committee teaches you where trust actually comes from, and it’s never the quarter when everything works. It’s the call a leader makes before the problem shows up in the numbers. Communicate early, especially when the news is bad. But don’t just present the problem; bring a plan. Bad news lands better when stakeholders see that management understands the issue, takes ownership of it and has a path to address it. – Deborah Smith, CenterCap Group
