High-profile Green Party figure branded ‘property-hoarding hypocrite’

    February 23, 20262 Mins Read

    Hannah Spencer, Green Party

Green Party by-election candidate Hannah Spencer has been branded a “property-hoarding hypocrite” by Labour after it was claimed she owns multiple properties worth around £1.2m.

The allegations have surfaced just days before the Gorton and Denton by-election in Manchester, which could cost Keir Starmer his job if the Greens manage to overturn a large Labour majority.

According to The Mail on Sunday, Spencer, 34, owns several homes, including a second property allegedly bought in 2024. The report also highlights historic posts on Mumsnet and other posts in which Spencer discusses how sellers should approach negotiations and choose between buyers.

    Stingy buyers

In one post, she said to have advised sellers to avoid first-time buyers who were “gifted money from a family member… who make sure they’re getting a good deal”. In another, she described threatening to accept a different offer until buyers “found” more money. She also referred to buyers who increased bids in small steps as “stingy and more likely to haggle”.

In one more, she wrote that she would not accept offers from purchasers needing to borrow more unless she “absolutely had to”, adding that banks were becoming “warier by the day”.

One minute they’re calling to abolish all landlords, the next they’re backing a candidate with multiple properties.”

Green Party leader Zack Polanski has regularly called for the abolition of private landlords and tougher rent controls. Labour MP Jo Platt said, “Time and again the Greens say one thing and do another. One minute they’re calling to abolish all landlords, the next they’re backing a candidate with multiple properties.”

In the same report, an unnamed Labour source also described Spencer as a “millionaire property-hoarding hypocrite”.

A Green Party spokesperson, though, defended her, saying: “Normal person has normal conversations years ago. It’s five days to go, the Greens are winning, and the political and media establishment are going into smearsville overdrive.”
