Sensex Today: Indian equity benchmarks ended higher on Tuesday as investors remained cautious ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s monetary policy outcome, due Wednesday, September 17.

Domestic cues also stayed firm with attention on the scheduled meeting between chief negotiators from India and the US for stock-taking discussions on the proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).

At the close, the BSE Sensex settled at 82,380.69, up 594.95 points or 0.73 per cent, while the NSE Nifty50 closed at 25,239.10, higher by 169.90 points or 0.68 per cent.

Top gainers on the Sensex included Kotak Bank, M&M, L&T, Bharti Airtel, and Maruti Suzuki. On the downside, Asian Paints and Bajaj Finance were the top laggards.

In the broader markets, the Nifty MidCap index advanced 0.54 per cent, and the Nifty SmallCap index gained 0.95 per cent.

Among sectors, the Nifty Auto index led the rally, rising 1.44 per cent, followed by Nifty Realty up 1.07 per cent. In contrast, the Nifty FMCG index dipped 0.24 per cent.

    Global Cues

Globally, Asian markets were buoyant, with Japan’s Nikkei crossing the 45,000 mark for the first time on Monday after US President Donald Trump said trade negotiations with China in Spain were making progress. The talks coincided with a ‘framework’ deal on the divestment of Chinese-owned TikTok, announced in Madrid by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who said the commercial terms had already been finalised.

Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are scheduled to review the agreement on Friday. The Topix index rose 0.36 per cent to a record high, South Korea’s Kospi gained 0.82 per cent, and Australia’s ASX 200 advanced 0.23 per cent.

On Wall Street, US stocks closed higher ahead of this week’s Federal Reserve policy meeting. The S&P 500 climbed 0.5 per cent to finish above 6,600 for the first time at 6,615.28. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.9 per cent to a record 22,348.75, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 49.23 points, or 0.1 per cent, to end at 45,883.45.
