Barhale wins approval for further HS2 utilities work at Euston

    September 10, 20252 Mins Read

Barhale has secured a further package of utility works at HS2’s London Euston terminus, extending its role under construction partner Mace Dragados.

The civils and tunnelling contractor will build new infrastructure around the southern section of the site, forming part of a multi-utility corridor set to link with existing services after looping around the western edge of Euston station.

The contract includes design and build of 210 metres of 1,000mm diameter and 360 metres of 250mm diameter fresh water diversions, as well as 220 metres of 1,500mm diameter foul water sewer diversion. It also covers 190 metres of 800mm gas main, 180 metres of high-voltage cable, and 90 metres of communications lines.

Several minor diversions of secondary services are also included.

The scope builds on enabling works already completed around the north of the station and is part of a wider utilities strategy for the Euston site. Barhale is also carrying out enabling works along Hampstead Road, Cardington Street and Cumberland Market, including the Southern Tie-in.

Senior contracts manager Mike Faherty said Barhale faced “exceptionally complex” challenges in the southern leg of the works, including crossing Euston Road with a 1,000mm water main while maintaining traffic access.

He added that the team would draw on knowledge gained from the earlier phases and long-standing relationships with Thames Water, Cadent and London Underground.

Design work is due to start in summer 2025, with construction expected to begin by March 2026 and complete in early 2029.

Barhale was appointed directly by Mace Dragados, HS2’s station construction partner at Euston. The client for the project is High Speed Two Ltd.
