Landowners voice concerns after Iowa Utilities Commission approves pipeline permit

    August 29, 20242 Mins Read

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) – This week, carbon pipeline leaders are hearing from Iowa landowners after a proposed pipeline was given state approval.

In June, Summit Carbon Solutions was approved to build a pipeline to transport carbon dioxide from Iowa to North Dakota for storage.

During a public hearing Wednesday, summit leaders heard from over 150 landowners about their concerns over the pipeline’s safety and the Summit’s use of eminent domain.

“If they want to build the pipeline, that’s okay, but I should have the right to tell them that I do not want it on my farmland,” Dan Tronchetti, from Green County, said.

Summit Solutions has been allowed to use eminent domain since receiving approval from the state.

In response to safety concerns, the company reminded landowners of the safety of Carbon Dioxide and that nobody has ever died in an accident related to its use or transportation.

“CO2 is less of a hazard than other products such as natural gas, anhydrous ammonia that is being transported in Iowa today and is non-flammable,” Dave Daum, with Summit Carbon Solutions, said.

Meanwhile, South Dakota has ruled against the pipeline, saying the company hasn’t proven it should be allowed to take private property.

Summit Carbon Solutions says it wants to negotiate with Iowa landowners by the end of the year, however it’s predicted the disagreement may be resolved in court.
