    Columbia well construction, electric projects up for public discussion

    August 24, 20242 Mins Read

    Two upcoming public input meetings will help Columbia Utilities with separate Water and Light projects.

    Columbia Water is proposing to construct a new well in the McBaine Bottoms as alluvial well No. 10 is at the end of its useful life and no longer is producing a sufficient volume of water, the city said in a news release.

    The public meeting is planned 4-6 p.m. Aug. 28 in the Columbia City Council chambers at Columbia City Hall, 701 E. Broadway. The water utility proposes drilling a new well on the same site, installing new pumping equipment and properly closing the existing well.

    Residents will have a chance to review preliminary plans, ask questions make comments and complete a public comment form. Public comments also are accepted via the city’s BeHeardCoMo website through Sept. 11.

    The next day, Columbia Utilities is seeking input on electric line extensions at four locations in the city.

    The proposed electric distribution line extensions meeting is planned 4-6 p.m. Aug. 29 in conference rooms 1A/1B at city hall.

    The extension projects would include the installation of new underground electric lines “that will increase reliability and distribute additional power to our customers,” the city said.

    Projects include:

    • Broadway and Fairview: construction starts at Perche Creek substation on Ludwick Boulevard, follows along Scott Boulevard and Broadway and ends at Broadway and Fairview Road;
    • Howard Orchard Road: starts at Perche Creek substation, following Louisville Drive and Brushwood Lake Road and ending at the intersection of Howard Orchard Road and Route KK;
    • Westbury Subdivision: starts at Perche creek, then follows Scott Boulevard and Bray Avenue and ends southeast of Hulen Lake at Park Ridge Drive;
    • Bolstad to Blue Ridge: construction starts at the Bolstad substation on Peabody road, follows along the west side of the COLT Railroad and ends at the Blue Ridge substation at the end of Blue Ridge Road.

    Work is expected to start in 2026 and no service interruptions are anticipated during the work. Members of the public will again have an opportunity to review preliminary plans, ask questions, make comments and complete a public comment form. The public also can submit comments online through BeHeardCoMo through Sept. 12.

    Those who need disability-related accommodations to attend either or both meetings should call 573-874-2489 or email city@como.gov.
