Are Banks Open on MLK Day 2026? Plus Stock Market Hours

    January 18, 20263 Mins Read

Monday, Jan. 19 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Established by Ronald Reagan in 1983, the annual holiday is commemorated on the third Monday in January each year.

Intended to coincide on or near King’s birthday (which falls on Jan. 15), MLK Day is a federal holiday and a day set aside to honor the legacy and contributions of the civil rights leader.

In observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, most schools, government agencies and post offices are closed on Monday.

But what about financial institutions? Are banks open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day?

If you’ve got a deposit, withdrawal or other financial business to take care of this Monday, see below to find details on whether or not banks, credit unions and U.S. stock markets will be open on MLK Day.

You’ll also find a list of financial institutions that will be closed in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, as well as a roundup of other bank holidays in 2026, so you can plan ahead.

As is the case with most federal holidays, a majority of banks, credit unions and other financial institutions will be closed on MLK Day and won’t reopen until Tuesday, Jan. 20.

The U.S. stock market will also be closed on Monday, Jan. 19, 2026, reopening again Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. ET.

Though banks and credit unions are closed, ATMs and online banking services will still be available for transactions on Jan. 19, however transactions won’t process until the following day when banks reopen.

Even though most, if not all, financial institutions will be closed in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, you may want to check with your local bank or credit union to confirm hours in case they differ.
